Grant Gustin, star of The Flash, shares a behind-the-scenes photo for a suit fitting, but with black fabric instead of Barry Allen's usual red. The Flash has been an integral part of The CW's Arrowverse since it premiered in 2014. With the flagship series Arrow now off the air, The Flash is currently the network's longest running superhero show. The series is currently in its sixth season and has already been renewed for next year. Unfortunately, the current season will end with episode 19 instead of the 22 originally planned. This is due to the coronavirus, which will also affect Supergirl and the freshman series Batwoman.
This season of The Flash was divided into two "graphic novels" with the crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths in the middle. The first portion dealt with the villain Bloodwork and lead up to Crisis. So far, the second has focused on navigating the new multiverse, as well as the death of the Speed Force. Despite the shortened season, Gustin recently reassured fans episode 19 will serve as an acceptable finale. However, he also shed some light on how season 6 was supposed to end, revealing it involved "a big Thawne cliffhanger."
With The Flash on hiatus until this past week, Gustin shared a fun behind-the-scenes photo earlier this month to cheer fans up. In it, he can be seen testing his suit for season 5. However, the suit is black instead of The Flash's trademark red, with Gustin explaining in his caption, "This was before they had the actual fabric for the suit, hence the black." However, he also admitted he enjoyed the change, saying, "After I saw it like this I kinda wanted a black Flash suit though..." Check out Gustin's post below:
Barry Allen's suits have been a key component of The Flash throughout its run. Gustin has worn many variations over the years, with changes often coming in between seasons. Barry's season 5 ring suit was especially interesting, as it was the first not created by Cisco Ramon. Instead, Barry receives it from his daughter, Nora West-Allen, who reveals Ryan Choi/The Atom made it. Despite that reveal coming in The Flash's season 5 premiere, fans didn't meet Ryan until over a year later, during Crisis on Infinite Earths. However, considering the amount of planning involved in the crossover, it's likely the writers had his appearance set that far in advance.
Though Gustin's behind-the-scenes photo shows a familiar suit, the black take on it is a welcome change, albeit one that was never expected to make it onscreen. Though red is Barry Allen's trademark color for a reason, it's also fun to see what the suit looks like in black. There is a precedent in the Arrowverse for major costume changes; just this season, Melissa Benoist's Supergirl traded her usual skirt for pants, a switch applauded by many. Though a color change probably isn't in the works for The Flash, it's still cool to see what one would look like.
