DC Vs. DBZ: Is Goku Faster Than Flash (Not Counting Instant Transmission)? - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Power levels are often hard to compare to one another. How does blowing up a planet, for example, equate to punching a hole in space-time? Speed, however, is often far easier to compare.

But things get trickier when you reach more absurd levels of speed. Take DC's The Flash, the fastest man alive, and Dragon Ball's Goku, the world's greatest warrior. Both are fast, but which one is faster? By calculating the speed of their fastest moments (and ignoring Instant Transmission, since that's a technique and not a demonstration of speed), it's possible to determine that answer.

Goku's Top Speeds

One of the clearest measurements of Goku's incredible speed comes early on in Dragon Ball Z when Goku travels across Snake Way. Snake Way is roughly 650,000 miles in length. It takes Goku six months to travel down it one way but takes roughly two days traveling back -- according to King Kai's estimate. This seems to indicate thas Goku traveled 13,018 million miles per hour traveling back, but Goku did not run across Snake Way -- he flew over it.

A Quora post from Chris Bennett extrapolated on this data to figure out how fast Goku would travel later on in the series. Bennett concluded that Goku spent 28 hours to travel over Snake Way and traveled approximately half the total distance of Snake Way: 312,500 miles. This meant that Goku was moving at approximately 11,160.7 MPH. Using canon power level information, he found that Goku traveled at a power level of 5,000. Bennett then divided 11,160.7 by five, concluding that, for every 1,000 points of power, Goku and friends could travel approximately an additional 2,232.1 MPH.

This data can then be applied to Goku's later power levels in the Frieza Saga. According to Daizenshuu 7, which provides power levels up to the Frieza Arc, Super Saiyan Goku's power level is 150 million. This means that by the time Goku fights Frieza, he can travel 334,821,428.6 mph -- roughly half the speed of light, which is 670.6 million MPH.

From there, we have no canon material to measure power levels. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot estimates that Goku's power levels are around 10 billion as of the Babidi Saga. By applying the same formula, this means that Goku, without Instant Transmission, can travel 22.321 trillion MPH -- or 33,314 times the speed of light! This information, however, assumes Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's power level calculations are canon and that power levels increase linearly at every 1,000 points per power level, and not exponentially.

It's worth noting, too, that Goku has also faced off against Broly, whose power was impossible to calculate, in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

The Flash's Top Speeds

The Flash Bart Allen feature

Barry Allen has pulled off numerous feats of incredible speed, such as when he outran Black Flash, for instance, but because we have no tangible evidence of his maximum speed, we can't use this for our calculation. However, it's far easier to calculate Wally West's speed.

For the best demonstration of how fast the Flash can travel, we can turn to JLA #88-89. In this issue, The Flash rescues the entire population of a North Korean city from a nuclear weapon. According to the comic's narration, the city of Chongjin has a population of 532,000 people. The Flash saves them, sometimes two at a time, by running back and forth between city and a hilltop 35 miles away from the city. This, in total, only took 0.00001 microseconds! A round trip between the city and hill is 70 miles. The comic claims this was "at a hair's breadth short of the speed of light," but this is physically impossible -- it's actually far faster.

Quora user Jamie Wilding created a formula to determine the Flash's speed in this instance. If Wally West took 1.5 people per round-trip of 70 miles, that meant he made this trip 354,667 times, thus traveling a total of 24,826,690 miles. If it really took him 0.00001 microseconds, this meant the Flash traveled 2.5 quintillion miles per hour -- or roughly 3.7 trillion times the speed of light.

This means that Wally West traveled 111 million times FASTER than Goku as of the Buu Saga, based on their maximum recorded speeds. Even if, by the time Goku fought Broly in Dragon Ball Super, Goku was a million times faster than in the Buu Saga, it would not matter. The Flash is faster.
