The Flash is The Fastest Man in MARVEL's Universe, Too - Screen Rant

The Flash has repeatedly proven he’s the fastest man alive in the DC Comics universe, thanks to his connection with the infinite Speed Force. But fans will be pleased to hear that in the comics, Barry Allen is also the fastest man... in Marvel's universe, too.

During the Marvel vs. DC crossover event, fans showed their support so that Wally West's Flash outraced Marvel’s Quicksilver with virtually no effort at all. However, the Flash really showed up Marvel’s speedsters much earlier when he made a brief and unexpected cameo in Quasar #17.

To make matters even more incredible, The Flash who appeared in this issue was allegedly Barry Allen – the Silver Age’s Flash – who was currently still dead in DC Comics. Who knew Barry spent his dead days in the Marvel reality?

Barry Allen Made it to the Marvel Universe

Quasar #17 was a lighthearted tale that had Cosmic Avenger Quasar meet the Runner, an Elder of the Universe. Just as other Elders of the Universe like The Collector or The Grandmaster had devoted themselves to the pursuit of collecting or games, the Runner had devoted himself to the pursuit of speed. Hearing that there were many incredibly fast speedsters on Earth, the Runner decided to gather several of them for a friendly race. The contestants included The Whizzer, a speedster from an alternate Earth, Makkari, an Eternal also obsessed with speed, and Quicksilver of the Avengers and X-Men. The Runner also invited super villains like Speed Demon and Black Racer to participate along with the retired World War II hero Super Sabre. One unexpected contestant was Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) who could move at near-light speed (although the Runner warned her that she could only run in the race, not fly).

The Runner had his fellow Elder the Architect build an energy construct to serve as the racetrack that stretched 384,392 kilometers all the way to the moon. Surprisingly, the Runner did not participate in the race himself, but had the Marvel speedsters compete against each other. Quasar also stood on the sidelines, observing the race and offering support to his friend Makkari. As the race began, Super Sabre, Black Racer, and Speed Demon took an early lead, but were gradually overtaken by Captain Marvel, the Whizzer, and Makkari. However, Captain Marvel was soon disqualified for not touching the ground long enough and Quicksilver groused that his time living on the moon with the Inhumans had reduced his muscle mass and endurance. Black Racer and Super Sabre eventually bowed out, and the race seemed to become a close one between Makkari and the Whizzer.

As the racers sped to the moon, however, Quasar sensed a disturbance in the energy track. At that moment, a bolt of lightning formed inside the track and a blond, bearded man appeared, wearing a tattered pair of red shorts with a lightning pattern on his waistband. Unable to remembered who he was, the man only knew that he needed to run – and quickly shot past the other competing racers, winning the race in a flash. Quasar himself took a shortcut to the moon and was able to get a reading on the mystery man, whom he identified as an extradimensional being, possibly from an alternate Earth. When the Runner asked who the winner’s name was, the confused man claimed it was “Buried Alien” and that being told he was the “Fastest Man Alive” felt… right.

While Marvel never disclosed the true identity of the race’s winner, readers immediately recognized “Buried Alien” as Barry Allen, the Flash, who had sacrificed his life during DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, and seemingly vanished from existence. Quasar #17, however, indicated that Barry’s feat had apparently blown him right out of the DC Universe and into the Marvel Universe. This proved the Runner’s good fortune as he immediately whisked “Buried” to a galactic marathon, despite Buried’s request to return to his home and family.

Whatever Happened to “Buried Alien”?

“Buried Alien” made an unexpected reappearance toward the end of Quasar’s series in Quasar #58. In this issue, Makkari gets a second chance to compete in the “galactic marathon” the Runner spoke of when his alien mentor asks him to compete in his place. Makkari emerges in an alien world where he learns the Runner has gathered champion speedsters from across the universe – including a giant turtle, a giant hare, a cybernetic runner with a wheel for legs, a multi-legged centipede, and… Buried Alien.

Now wearing a red and yellow suit reminiscent of the Flash costume, “Buried” has now taken to calling himself… “FastForward” (yes, really). Still amnesiac, but able to recall minor details like the fact that he has a wife, the man tells Makkari that he gets his main pleasure from running. Once the race begins, however, super-fast bunny Fooferah decides to cheat, believing his people will make stew out of him if he loses. He manages to take out three runners, but before he can knock out Makkari, “Buried Alien” zips behind the treacherous rabbit and punches him out – knowing that the delay cost him the race. “Buried” takes this all good naturedly, however, and waves Makkari on, wishing him good luck.

Without “Buried Alien” to compete with, Makkari manages to win the race and is proclaimed the fastest being in the galaxy by Looney Toon’s Road Runner (again, yes, really). Unfortunately, Makkari later learns that running that fast sped up his perceptions to the point where he can no longer interact with normal people, who now look like immobile statues to him. About the only people Makkari can communicate with in his current state are superfast folk like the Runner and “Buried Alien.”

Taking pity on Makkari, “Buried Alien” offers to help him find a way to slow down his hyper perceptions. Realizing that competition has a dark side, Makkari offers his thanks, and agrees to also help “Buried” find his way back to his home universe. The two take off for parts unknown… but as Barry Allen returned to the DC Universe some years later (claiming to have come from the Speed Force), it would seem that their quest was successful.

Granted, dimensional travel (along with copyright restrictions) prevented Barry from recalling his many adventures in the Marvel Universe, but readers now know the The Flash spent some time chilling in the Marvel Universe post-Crisis – and got to show Marvel’s speedsters who really deserves the title of “Fastest Man Alive.”
