The Flash: 5 Characters Who Make The Show Great (& 5 Who Ruin It) - Screen Rant

The hit CW show The Flash is currently in its sixth season. During that time, many different characters have been introduced to Barry Allen and his friends at Star Labs. Some have been more successful with the audience than others. Regardless, most have made some kind of impact, positive or negative, on the series as a whole.

Whether these new characters have been friends, foes or even family, the show has grown and changed as a result of their inclusion. Here are five characters who have made The Flash great and another five who may have ruined it.

10 Ruin: Orlin Dwyer/Cicada

Cicada The Flash 100th episode

Orlin, better known as Cicada and played by Chris Klein, was the main antagonist for the first half of Season 5. An ordinary blue-collar man who gained powers after being struck by a dark-matter loaded piece of the Star Labs satellite. This incident also left his niece, Grace, critically injured.

While Orlin's backstory and motivations were different as far as The Flash is concerned, Orlin himself was not particularly interesting. Klein, best known for his work in the American Pie series of films was not a strong enough actor for the part and thus his performance fell flat. By no means the best villain that the show has had.

9 Great: Joe West

The Flash Jesse L Martin Joe West

Police Captain Joe West, played by Jesse L. Martin since the first season, is in the unique position of being both Barry Allen's foster father and his wife Iris' biological father. Time and time again, Martin's acting has made Joe one of the most loved characters on The Flash. Whether it's through his heart-to-hearts with Barry and Iris or being a fatherly figure to all of Team Flash, the show would not be the same without Joe.

Joe is a staple of The Flash and is an adaptable character, fulfilling different purposes for other characters in order to serve their individual stories.

8 Ruin: Hunter Zolomon

Played by Teddy Sears, Hunter is the true, unmasked identity of Zoom, season two's main antagonist. While Zoom, voiced by Tony Todd, was a frightening and physically imposing villain, the reveal of Hunter was somewhat disappointing. However, this did not have anything to do with Sears personally.

Much like the previous season's antagonist, Hunter posed as an ally to Team Flash only to betray them and reveal his true identity. Repeating the same storytelling technique was sloppy writing and there could have been a different, more interesting way to introduce Hunter as the villain rather than retreading old ground.

7 Great: Frost

Played by Danielle Panabaker, Frost is one of two dual identities in the mind and body of Caitlin Snow. Formerly known as Killer Frost, season six has developed the character separately from Caitlin. Thanks to Ralph Dibny/Elongated Man, she is now a more involved member of the team.

With Frost being so different from Caitlin, the role gives Panabaker an opportunity to show her range while also having different interactions with the same core actors. Watching Frost's growth parallel to Caitlin has also been very interesting to see.

6 Ruin: Caitlin Snow

Also played by Danielle Panabaker, the irony of Caitlin being the "original" personality is that she is a far less interesting character than Frost. While valued on the team for her medical and physiological expertise, Caitlin's separate storylines have been not as compelling. Especially when compared to how she is forced to act in a moment of panic to save someone's life.

In the early seasons, after losing her husband, Caitlin was involved in a string of unsuccessful romantic relationships with Hunter Zolomon and Julian Albert (Tom Felton). Even now, the character is being sidelined in favor of Frost.

5 Great: Cisco Ramon

Team Flash's resident superhero nerd as well as the man who has virtually named every meta-human, heroic or villainous since the show started in 2014. In less capable hands, Cisco could have been one-dimensional and annoying. However, beyond being the comedic relief, actor Carlos Valdes has embued Cisco with depth while on the emotional journey mapped out by the writers.

As arguably Barry Allen's closest friend, Cisco is extremely important - to the titular hero, the team and the show itself as one of the major characters. The character has been on an unexpected path considering his initial trajectory. Long may Cisco continue.

4 Ruin: Savitar

Savitar was a well-executed villain, both in his masked form as voiced by Tobin Bell as well as his true self portrayed by Grant Gustin. However, the show took far too long to reveal Savitar's identity in season three and this ultimately was detrimental to the character by not having enough time to flesh out his story post-unmasking.

Savitar's identity as a time remnant of Barry Allen presented more questions than answers. With only three episodes left of the season, it is not an ideal predicament. Not The Flash's finest hour on this occasion.

3 Great: Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash

Of all the villains to appear on The Flash to date, Thawne is the most reoccurring and has the greatest emotional link to Barry, being his one-time mentor and murderer of his mother, Nora Allen. Unlike some of his successors as the main antagonist, Thawne has a personal connection to many of the other characters through his faux mentoring role as Harrison Wells in the first season.

Unusually for The Flash, Thawne has been played extensively by two actors. While in disguise as Harrison Wells, series regular Tom Cavanagh has played the character at least once throughout each of the six seasons. Matt Letscher, who plays Thawne's actual likeness has also appeared on Flash and was a regular on the second season of Legends of Tomorrow.  Both are talented actors who have brought different although equally compelling interpretations of the role.

2 Ruin: Nora West Allen

Being Barry and Iris' daughter from the future, Nora was a primary character in the fifth season after appearing sporadically in the fourth as an unidentified presence in the lives of Team Flash. While no longer on the show, her actions which caused the Crisis on Infinite Earths to occur earlier than expected still affect recent episodes. Nora brought something different to the show in allowing Barry and Iris to explore being parents albeit under abnormal circumstances.

However, while this relationship was interesting, Nora was featured extensively to the detriment of others. Not including Barry, Iris, Thawne and Sherloque Wells, almost all the existing main characters took a backseat in relevance to the plot. Nora also had a prominent role in the one-hundredth episode, overshadowing original Team Flash members such as Iris, Cisco, and Caitlin.

1 Great: Barry Allen/The Flash

Due to portraying the titular protagonist, actor Grant Gustin has a certain pressure to make Barry as likable as possible. Otherwise, there would be no show. Most, if not all of the experiences depicted in The Flash are seen through Barry's eyes: his mother's murder, discovering his powers, being both loved and betrayed to name just a few. It is important to remember that Barry is also the link between all the main characters; his surrogate (later in-law) family, the Wests and his friends at Star Labs, were brought together initially by Barry's coma in season one.

As the main character, the audience is privy to Barry's private moments when he's not saving Central City. Both Barry's happiness and turmoil are connected so strongly that it would be difficult not to emphasize with his situation at times. When there is that much personal investment in a fictional character, it is clear that they make the show great.
