The Flash's First Original Meta Was a Win for the Series | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 6, Episode 15, "The Exorcism of Nash Wells," which aired Tuesday on The CW.

After six seasons and over 120 episodes, The Flash television series has featured some of the character's biggest comic book villains. Throughout the years, the Scarlet Speedster has gone up against the likes of Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Gorilla Grodd, the Thinker and the Rogues. This season alone, the character is facing a mixture of old and new threats, as Godspeed, Bloodwork, a new Mirror Master and a different Doctor Light have all clashed with Barry Allen in one form or another.

Now, following the conclusion of the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover, Team Flash is dealing with a new threat: the mysterious organization known as Black Hole. And through this clandestine operation, the series has introduced a new, original villain in Sunshine. The character didn't appear in the comics first, which makes this a unique development for the series. And the best part? She's a total win for The Flash.

Sunshine, played by actor Natalie Sharp, debuted in "The Exorcism of Nash Wells" as the primary antagonist. She arrived on the scene as a super-powered thief working for Black Hole, hired by Joseph Carver, the dubious CEO of McCulloch Technologies to steal a prismatic refractor, the invention of his missing wife, Eva McCulloch.

As becomes clear in the episode, Millie was at one time a member of the United States Army. After gaining special abilities during the fateful explosion of S.T.A.R. Labs' particle accelerator in 2013, she became a member of a special unit in the army where she gained the codename Sunshine. After getting hit by the particle accelerator's dark matter, Millie became able to manipulate light. Because of this, she's incredibly powerful, not only being able to teleport but can also become invisible and use light itself as a weapon.

In her altercation with Killer Frost and the Flash, Sunshine proved to be a worthy adversary. What's more, she proved to be a veritable fighting machine when she took on multiple police officers, showing that she was not only powerful but a skilled fighter thanks to her time in the army.

The episode didn't devote much time to show what made the character tick, but that could always come later, should Sunshine make further appearances on the series. Fans should certainly hope she does because she proved to be a fun and original addition for The Flash. In fact, thanks to her military background, she proved to be a far more effective antagonist than multiple other characters who were established in the comics first.

Introducing an original character in a universe that already has an established source material is always going to be a gamble -- but in Sunshine's case, it's one that has paid off. The character shows that The Flash has the potential to create exciting original characters, ones who could always end up making the jump to comics. Sunshine could end up being the first of many, and that has fans looking forward to more of The Flash.

Airing on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
