The Flash: 5 Best Versions Of The DC Hero (& 5 Worst) | CBR - CBR

As the Fastest Man Alive, The Flash has been a crucial member of the Justice League for many years. While several people have held the name over time, the character is almost always one of the most inspiring and lighthearted members of DC’s distinguished team of heroes.

Like with many other comic book heroes, several alternate versions of The Flash have been explored over time. While some are much faster, others are just not as interesting, or even just evil. Despite this, plenty of alternate Flashes have earned quite the reputation making it easy to see the character’s influence throughout the entire multiverse. Looking at some of the best and worst examples of his character, here is our list of the 5 best versions of the Flash, and the 5 worst.

10 Worst: Lia Nelson

Within Earth 9, celebrity Lia Nelson took on the role of The Flash after acquiring and mastering her abilities. Though she can move at incredible speeds, Lia is actually different from almost every other speedster in that she isn’t actually connected to the Speed Force. Instead, her abilities are derived from light in that she is able to manipulate certain aspects of it.

Of course, this doesn’t make her a bad character or even a bad hero, but it does make her a bit of a bad Flash. While the name is still fitting, Lia can’t push the same boundaries as other speedsters, making her stand out from many others who have called themselves The Flash. Likewise, with a somewhat questionable personality, Lia just can’t quite measure up to the same level as other Scarlet Speedsters before her.

9 Best: Red Racer

Introduced as part of Grant Morrison’s Multiversity series, Red Racer hasn’t actually had an extensive number of comic book appearances. Despite being a minor character though, Red Racer is still very similar to Flash himself, especially when it comes to being a hero.

Like almost every main version of Flash, Red Racer was willing to sacrifice himself when he needed to, putting the betterment of others before himself. Not only did he manage to save the heroes who were around him at the time, but his actions also helped save the entire multiverse. While he may not have used the name “The Flash,” Red Racer is still one of the most honorable speedsters around.

8 Worst: Red Death

Spinning out of DC’s recent Dark Nights Metal event, Red Death is actually a fusion of both Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne. Following the death of those close to him, Bruce finally snapped and kidnapped Barry with the hopes of stealing his powers. Instead, the process fused the two into one, with Bruce being mostly in control.

Since then, Barry has been inside Bruce’s head, constantly trying to remind him of the hero he once was. Outside of the comics, Red Death has actually been quite popular amongst fans. However, his incredibly brutal actions have made him one of the most frightening reflections of the character to date, which is definitely enough for him to be considered one of the worst versions of the Flash ever, however cool he may actually be.

7 Best: Fastback

Fastback meets the Flash

While he may be a bit silly, Fastback is actually a pretty interesting character. Residing in the same universe as Captain Carrot, Fastback is a turtle who, after being struck by a meteorite, found himself with the ability to run at super speeds. Like Red Racer, Fastback hasn’t been in too much, but his personality has definitely made him one of the better speedsters from the multiverse.

Aside from the goofy nature of his character, Fastback has still proven to be just as heroic as characters like Barry Allen. Likewise, with the lighthearted and humorous nature commonly associated with him, he definitely fits right in with the rest of the Flash Family.

6 Worst: Dark Flash

The love between Wally West and Linda Park was always incredibly strong. Therefore, seeing what Wally could look like without her is incredibly difficult. In an alternate universe, Walter West experienced just that, losing his greatest love to a criminal, along with his sense of morality as well.

As Dark Flash, Walter became incredibly brutal, putting a swift end to criminals in his universe. While his backstory is almost more heartbreaking than anything, Walter is a truly frightening example of what Wally himself could have become. Thankfully, things worked out much better for the main version of Flash, but it is still terrifying to think he could become anything like Dark Flash.

5 Best: Jay Garrick

As the original Flash, Jay Garrick is easily one of the best characters to ever hold the mantle of Flash. Throughout the Golden Age of comics and beyond, Jay has continually influenced Barry, the speed force, and the entire DC universe, almost always with a smile.

Though his age typically prevents him from pushing new boundaries with the Speed Force, Jay has still laid the groundwork for every speedster who came after him. Likewise, given his wise demeanor, Jay has inspired countless others across the DC universe, especially as a member of the Justice Society of America. While he may not be the fastest man alive anymore, Jay is still one of the best Flashes to ever live.

4 Worst: Future Barry

Future Flash

In one particularly bleak timeline, Barry Allen is actually pushed to a breaking point, losing those close to him along with his hope for the future. Deciding to travel back in time to save the future, this version of Barry sets his sights on the younger, present-day version of himself.

Of course, this creates all sorts of problems with time travel, but still shows an intriguing look at one of DC’s best heroes. For Barry Allen to end up this way, some truly terrible things must have happened in the process, which almost makes this version unbelievable. While it really is an interesting concept, it is also hard to imagine Barry being so hopeless and brutal.

3 Best: Barry Allen

Barry Allen is easily one of the most popular versions of Flash ever, and deservedly so. For years, the character served bravely as a member of the Justice League and even made the ultimate sacrifice in the pages of Crisis On Infinite Earths. Since then, he has returned to the land of the living and pushed all sorts of new boundaries within the Speed Force.

Though he still makes a mistake from time to time, Barry’s more lighthearted personality and general attempt to do what's right is part of what makes so many people a fan of him. While he is still not the fastest speedster around, he is definitely worthy of his place in the DC universe.

2 Worst: Johnny Quick

On Earth 3 in DC’s extensive multiverse, Johnny Quick is the main speedster of the universe. Unfortunately, good and evil are opposites in this world, meaning that evil always triumphs over good. As a result, Johnny Quick is actually one of the darkest and most twisted versions of Flash around.

Once again, this version of Flash is still interesting, but definitely not the type of character anyone would want as the main Flash. Johnny’s wild personality had definitely made him worthy of his spot on the Crime Syndicate but also solidified his position as one of the worst versions of Flash around. Though he may consider that to be a compliment, he is definitely far from the ideal speedster.

1 Best: Wally West

Following the death of Barry Allen, Wally West, the original Kid Flash, ascended to the role of his mentor. Since then, Wally has been doing all sorts of things, saving countless lives while growing faster and studying the Speed Force. Over time, Wally actually saw a lot of character growth, even getting married and having children of his own.

Unfortunately, following the launch of the New 52, Wally became a forgotten character, with DC erasing much of his accomplishments from history. However, die-hard fans still remember the character’s achievements both in the comics and in shows like Justice League: Unlimited. While many people know Barry over Wally, Wally not only kept a great personality through his time as Flash but also opened the character up to all sorts of new possibilities as well.
