The Flash Runs Solo as Sony Drops a Spider-Man Spinoff from Its Release Schedule - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The Flash will fly solo when it hits theaters in 2023.

According to Exhibitor Relations Co. on Twitter, the untitled Marvel Universe film from Sony Pictures that was set to premiere on June 23, 2023, the same day as Warner Bros. and DC Films' The Flash is scheduled to hit theaters, has been removed from the release calendar. A reason for its removal has not been confirmed.

Sony Pictures' franchise of live-action Marvel spinoffs films centered around Spider-Man villains began with 2018's Venom and was followed by the sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the Jared Leto-led Morbius. However, in October 2021, Sony added two "Untitled Sony/Marvel Universe" films to its 2023 release schedule, which were scheduled to release in theaters on June 23, 2023 and Oct. 6, 2023, respectively. Details surrounding the untitled Spider-Man spinoffs remain unknown.

While a Marvel/Sony film hadn't been officially announced for June 23, Sony already has two other Spider-Man spinoff films expected to release that year, including Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular villain, which is expected to hit theaters on Jan. 13, 2023. Meanwhile, Sony has also announced a Madame Web movie starring Dakota Johnson, which will hit theaters on July 7 that same year, just a few weeks after The Flash. While Kraven the Hunter began filming earlier this year, production on Madame Web recently began in Boston, with filming set to take place between July and October 2022.

"Well, there's the Marvel Universe, which is one container and then there's the Spider-Verse movies, which are different and then there's the other universe where the Sony characters are in," said Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal in November 2021 when asked about how Sony's Spider-Man films work with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "We all are very respectful of each other and work together and make sure that we're only being additive."

News of the release schedule change comes after continued controversy and public scandals surrounding current The Flash star Ezra Miller. Miler has portrayed Barry Allen/The Flash in the DC Extended Universe since 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, it was recently reported that Warner Bros. Discovery has no plans to work with Miller after The Flash debuts in theaters. Recently, fans have rallied around The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page to replace Miller in the DCEU.

Despite the mounting allegations against the film's leading actor, Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have no plans to change the release date of The Flash or alter its theatrical release.

The Flash races into theaters on June 23, 2023.
