The Arrowverse’s longest-running series – The Flash — will return for Season 9, The CW confirmed in March. But first, June 29’s “Negative, Part Two” Season 8 finale will find the crew gathering to support The Flash (Grant Gustin) when he needs them the most. Following the many recent discoveries — including Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne (aka Reverse-Flash) ruthlessly throwing light on Iris’ horrific Time Sickness death — Flash showrunner Eric Wallace previewed to TVLine that the episode solves several critical questions.
“You’ll hear it in the words of the people who are putting this all together, the masterminds behind everything that’s been happening in Season 8,” he continued. “You will get an explanation from our “Big Bads,” the Negative Forces themselves [played by Christian Magby, Ennis Esmer, and Sara Garcia], about why they’re doing what they’re doing, and why they did it now, which is really awesome.”
The cast of the Flash Season 9 Cast
Gustin’s agreement to resume his role as Barry Allen/The Flash in early 2022 apparently opened the way for the renewal of Season 9. Candice Patton will reprise her role as the fearless journalist Iris West-Allen for Season 9, TVLine reported on June 28. The actor had previously stated that her future on the show was questionable.
During an Instagram AMA in early April, she informed a fan that she was “not sure” if she would return and was taking it “one date at a time,” reported TVLine. Later that month, she posted a video with the phrase “THAT’S A WRAP ON IRIS WEST-ALLEN,” raising further doubt about the future of her role on the show.
- Meanwhile, Jesse L. Martin confirmed in April that after eight seasons as Detective Joe West he is leaving The Flash as a series regular to star in the NBC pilot The Irrational. In addition to Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost), Danielle Nicolet (Cecile Horton), Kayla Compton (Allegra Garcia), and Brandon McKnight (Chester P. Runn), among others, could return for The Flash Season 8.
The plotline of the Flash Season 9
The plot of Season 9 is currently under wraps, but Wallace has revealed why John Diggle‘s (David Ramsey) Green Lantern-style journey terminated before the following chapter. The condensed version? The ninth season of The Flash wasn’t renewed until after the final script was done, and they wanted to give the character a fitting sendoff.
“We thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we have to do this because perhaps no one else will!'” he told TVLine. “I spoke with David Ramsey myself and told him, ‘I’d like to put an end to this,’ and he was fine with it. And when I told him our plans, he thought they were excellent.”
Wallace further suggested that Diggle’s refusal of his “cosmic” invitation “served a greater purpose” by alluding to the Blackest Night scenario from the comic books. As of now, he is unsure if Season 9 will be The Flash’s last, thus the plot may not reach that point.
“As a comic book fan, I wanted to set the seeds for Blackest Night, and that Diggle moment assisted me in doing so,” he explained. But I’m not sure if we’ll ever get there.
Bloodwork, aka Dr. Ramsey Rosso, (Sendhil Ramamurthy), who last featured in Season 6, is expected to return in Season 9 to wreak havoc, according to fans. Earth-Prime, a DC comic book series centered in the Arrowverse, purportedly included Bloodwork escaping from jail, with the promise that the tale would continue in Season 9 of The Flash.
Iris West-Allen and Barry Allen discussed how the Negative Speed Force was destined to choose a new avatar in the closing scene of the eighth season finale of The Flash, “Negative, Part 2.” This conversation took place over photographs of a science lab on June 29, 2049, where a mysterious blue crystal began to shine as though ignited from within. Fans of The Flash comics feel this may be a clue that Cobalt Blue will be introduced in season 9 of The Flash.
The Flash Season 9 Release Date
According to Bustle, though CW has yet to announce when Season 9 of The Flash will premiere, there are rumors that it may debut in the middle of 2023.
If this occurs, it will be unlike the release of its eight predecessors, all of which were released in the fall. Therefore, the premiere might occur in January 2023.
Plan About Season 10 of The Flash
The tenth season of The Flash has not yet been determined. Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW, said during a conference call in May 2022, per THR, that he was open to the potential of a fourth season.
Due to the departure of the majority of the series’ original ensemble and the uncertainty of Danielle Panabaker’s return, it seems likely that The Flash season 9 will be the series’ last and conclude the Earth-Prime adventures on television.
