The Flash and Aquaman Battle Foes With The Atom's Greatest Asset - CBR - Comic Book Resources

To face an alien threat that is mind-controlling the planet, the Flash and Aquaman resort to using a DC hero's greatest weapon.

A preview for the second issue of Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong shows the two heroes bringing the fight to whatever has enslaved their planet. While Barry Allen was running through the Speed Force and Arthur Curry was deep within the Mariana Trench, everyone on Earth began to hear and then sing an alien song that rendered them motionless, leaving Flash and Aquaman as the only heroes standing and capable of saving the world. After an unsuccessful attempt to stop the alien threat with Captain Cold's cold gun, Flash believes that one device may be able to make a difference: the Atom's Bio-Belt.

  • The true purpose of the Voidsong is revealed! The end of the world was just the beginning! With the Voidsong’s influence spreading deep into the fabric of reality, Aquaman and the Flash are the only heroes left standing. The apocalyptic circumstances seem to have finally forged a true partnership between these two disparate heroes, which raises a glimmer of hope. But as they head beneath the waves to do battle with the entity behind the song, what closely guarded secret will shatter the trust they’d formed?

Since the cold gun has no effect on the threat at all, Barry deduces that it must not be made of matter from the heroes' universe as it is known. The Atom's Bio-Belt is powered by a white dwarf star though, so the speedster theorizes that it may be able to hurt the alien menace since it is "the sole device capable of exerting gravity on something that might as well have oozed out of a black hole." So, rather than using the Bio-Belt for its designed purpose, the Flash throws the belt at the creature with all his might.

The Atom's Bio-Belt Explained

The Bio-Belt first appears in 1961's Showcase #34 along with Dr. Ray Palmer aka the Atom, a character created by Julius Schwartz, Gardner Fox and Gil Kane. Though Palmer is not the first Atom (that honor belonging to Al Pratt), the Bio-Belt he developed allows him to alter his size, mass, density, strength and other properties. The belt is also used by Palmer's successor as the Atom, Ryan Choi.

Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong is a three-issue miniseries with larger issues containing 56 pages each. The title is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, the duo currently helming Marvel's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty series focused on Steve Rogers. Voidsong provides readers with the opportunity to see Barry and Arthur team up outside current continuity, being that both Justice League members are missing from the main DC Universe following Infinite Frontier #6 and Justice League #75, though the hunt is on for them in DC's Dark Crisis event.

Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong #2 is written by Kelly and Lanzing with interior and variant cover art by Vasco Georgiev, colors by Rain Beredo and letters by Troy Peteri. Main cover art for the issue is created by Mike Perkins and Beredo. The issue goes on sale July 19 from DC Comics.
