The Flash's Greatest Fan is Officially... Barry Allen? - Screen Rant

Barry Allen's debut issue featured a meta moment that showed deep-down, he was one of the Flash's biggest fans. Moments before getting struck by lightning and gaining metahuman powers, the Flash read a comic starring Jay Garrick and dreamed of having his powers - then, he actually got them.

The first silver age appearance of the Flash happened in Showcase #4 (1956) by Robert Kanigher, Carmine Infantino, Joe Kubert, and Gaspar Saladino. In the story, a scientist named Barry Allen is at his lab during al electric storm. Allen's very first line comes as he's reading a copy of Flash Comics, as he wonders what it would like to the fastest man on Earth just like Jay Garrick is in the story. On the very next page, the Flash is struck by lightning which infused with the chemicals in the lab that gives him the very same powers he just read about.

The moment is incredibly meta, as the future Flash just so happens to be reading a story about Jay Garrick, the original Flash, just before getting his powers. Naturally, Barry was discussing just how great the Flash was before being struck by lightning: "What a character Flash was -- battling crime and injustice everywhere! And what a unique weapon he had against the arsenal of crime! Speed! Supersonic speed! Undreamed of speed!" Barry than wonders what it would be like to be the fastest man on Earth like the Flash who is a "character some writer dreamed up!"

It's clear Barry was a massive fan of the Flash. The fiction he was reading would come to life. The question remains: Was Barry's version of the Flash inspired by a fictional version of the character? Did he use the name the Flash because he was such a fan of the comic? It can't be a coincidence. Garrick would later be reintroduced in the iconic Flash #123, aka "The Flash of Two Worlds." Barry's stories became reality as another Earth revealed the Golden Age version of the Flash was very much real.

Honestly, Barry being a massive fan of the Flash comics before becoming the Flash is a great origin that showed the power of comic books. Even one of DC's biggest characters read comic books and fantasized about becoming a superhero. Fortunately for him, his wishes would soon come true. The story proves Barry Allen was one of the biggest fans of the Flash - even before landing life-changing powers.
