The Flash: Joe West's Black Hole Vendetta Takes Him Down a Dark Path - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for "So Long and Goodnight," the latest episode of The Flash.

Since the start of The Flash Season 6's second half, Barry Allen and his team have been going up against a new threat. After spending most of their time dealing with powerful supervillains, Team Flash's latest enemy is something they haven't gone up against before: an organization. Following "Crisis on Infinite Earths," the Scarlet Speedster has been trying to take down the mysterious group known as Black Hole.

Black Hole is led by Joseph Carver, the CEO of tech giant McCulloch Technologies, and it employs powerful metahumans as its muscle. A new Dr. Light and original villain Sunshine work for the organization, embarking on missions to take out Iris West, Barry Allen, and other members of Team Flash. Now, in the series' latest episode, the creepy Rag Doll returns to Central City, and he is revealed to be another metahuman hired by Black Hole. And what's worse, Rag Doll has his own target on Team Flash: Joe West.

For some time now, Central City police captain Joe West has figured out McCulloch Technologies' Joseph Carver has a mole inside the CCPD. For that reason, he's been on an investigation of his own, trying to take Carver down. Carver may not have any superpowers, unlike Reverse-Flash or the Thinker, but he still poses a great danger. With his deep pockets and his powerful influence, he hires other super-powered individuals to do his bidding, while he remains in the clear, thus making him untouchable.

Carver hires Rag Doll to take care of Joe, but his first attempt to kill the police captain is unsuccessful. This near brush with death hits Joe hard, and it pushes him down a dark path. Now that his own life is on the line, West decides to leave his badge at home and face Carver directly. While the evil CEO denies any involvement at first, he eventually slips up and drops all pretenses. Carver finally shows Joe who he really is, and tells him all about his plan to get rid of him. It doesn't even matter Joe has recorded their conversation because Carver has the technology to erase it instantly. Joe pushes back by punching him, but it makes no difference -- Carver has all the power. And the worst part is he doesn't stop there.

Next, he sends Rag Doll to kidnap Cecile, and the metahuman hatches an elaborate plan to take out Joe with a bomb. Thankfully, the Flash is able to stop Rag Doll, but this second attack, one that also involves the woman he loves, is simply too much for Joe. As the episode comes to a close, he accepts going into witness protection so Carver can't go after him or his family.

Therefore, Joe is now off the map. In fact, even Barry doesn't know where he's going. It's unclear when Joe will return but, for the time being, he's been taken off the board. However, this doesn't mean he's out of the action just yet. In fact, with a new identity and the element of surprise on his side, Joe could return at any moment to help take Carver down for good.

Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin, Danielle Nicolet and Hartley Sawyer.
