Warning! Minor spoilers ahead for The Flash season 7.
The Flash sets up Brandon Routh’s future return to the Arrowverse as Ray Palmer. The beloved character was first introduced in season 3 of Arrow. Prior to taking on another DC Comics role, Routh was well-known by to fans for playing Superman/Clark Kent in 2006’s Superman Returns. While he reprised that particular role during Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was Ray whose longevity and personality made a stronger impact in the Arrowverse, jumping from Arrow to Legends of Tomorrow before bidding farewell to the latter show last year. However, The Flash may have just teased his potential return.
In season 5 of Legends of Tomorrow, Ray left the Waverider and his friends behind to start a new, normal life after marrying Nora Darhk (Courtney Ford). The audience never learned where the pair actually went after leaving the time ship, only that they would go back to living more stable lives, presumably in the present day. Fast forward to over a year later to The Flash season 7’s episode 16, called “P.O.W.”: John Diggle shows up in Central City to help Barry in his fight against the Godspeed clones and the civil war the speedsters have started. He also brings with him some cool gadgets and tech, one of which includes nanites courtesy of Ray.
This implies that Ray may have reconnected with Diggle after retiring from the Legends and Routh could return to the Arrowverse at some point in the near future. It’s possible that Ray, like former Team Flash member Cisco Ramon, who left The Flash in season 7, is now working with Diggle at ARGUS. Ray’s life after departing Legends of Tomorrow is hard to gauge, but it would make sense for him to work with his former colleague at the agency. After all, returning to a normal life means Ray needed a job and money. Palmer Tech was previously destroyed, so ARGUS was probably the next best choice to put his skills to good use. Diggle is also a friend, so it’s likely Ray called him upon returning to the main timeline. With Diggle transferring to Metropolis, it could be that Ray took his old position at the Star City branch of ARGUS and he's been working there ever since.
Ray is still alive and the door is always open for him to return to the Arrowverse in the same way David Ramsey has reprised his role as Diggle across the universe’s various shows. Fans (and Routh) were also sad about Ray being booted from Legends of Tomorrow, so his potential return would certainly be celebrated. With all that in mind, the possibility of Ray working alongside Diggle at ARGUS could pave the way for his appearance in the Green Lantern series coming to HBO Max. There have been several clues hinting at Diggle becoming Green Lantern for a long time now, with the biggest one coming during Arrow’s series finale, and it would be interesting if Ray got to be a part of the series in some way while still being connected to the Arrowverse at large.
Thus far, there haven’t been answers regarding what’s going on with Diggle’s headaches. But Ray could help Diggle if he ever does embrace being Green Lantern, possibly working as his backup out in the field and aiding in the development of technology for the Green Lantern Corp. The Flash certainly didn’t have to mention Ray at all, but the fact he was brought up suggests he is working with Diggle and could drop back into the Arrowverse eventually.
