Here are the details from Tuesday's special meeting
VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria I.S.D. school board approved a $2,100 increase to all teachers during a special called meeting held on Tuesday, July 27.
V.I.S.D. teachers will see pay raises this school year. In order to maintain them, though, there needs to be a voter approved tax rate election (VATRE).
According to Randy Meyer, the district’s chief financial officer, the pay increase is a 4% increase from the midpoint of district pay. Due to this increase, teachers who are paid below the midpoint will experience a higher increase than 4% of their current salary. Teachers who make more than the midpoint will see less than a 4% increase of their current salary, said Meyer.
Meyer explained that the pay increase impacts all teachers except those who are new to the profession and the district.
According to Superintendent Quintin Shepherd, the pay raises come from the available 85% of district budget set aside for salaries and payroll. On the contrary, these pay raises can’t be used without a voter approved tax rate election, or VATRE.
During Tuesday’s special called meeting, a bond planning task force proposed a 3-cent VATRE to the board. If the board approves the VATRE, it will be placed on the Nov. 2, 2021 ballot. The district will use federal funds towards the salary increase if the community doesn’t approve the VATRE. This replacement can only last for approximately two years. According to Shepherd, after that, cuts will need to be made.
During the meeting, board members showed their excitement and appreciation to see teacher pay raises in the 2021-22 compensation plan.
