Warning: contains spoilers for The Flash 2021 Annual!
DC Comics’ Flash and Superman have always been at the top of their game when it comes to speed, and while fans have often debated who would truly win in a race, the newest (and newly returned) speedster, Wally West, just put that argument to rest. Barry Allen might have had kept Superman at arms length whenever they decided to hit the track, but Wally blows the Man of Steel away by a long shot, and this issue proves it!
Acting as the finale to the current story arc titled “Blink of an Eye,” The Flash 2021 Annual by Jeremy Adams and Fernando Pasarin & Brandon Peterson, sees Wally West still stuck in a fluctuating Speed Force surge that’s been pulling him across time and space. Embodying a different speedster at each new stop, Wally and the rest of the crew back at the Speed Lab – which includes Barry Allen, Green Arrow and Mr. Terrific – are doing what they can to figure out why the fluctuations are happening, and how they can stop them before they get any worse.
Returning from the grave after quite some time away, the super speedster known as Savitar is revealed to be behind all of the disruptions in the Speed Force as of late and, being a villain who wants nothing more than to become one with said Speed Force, is hell-bent on making Wally pay for stepping in his way. Pulled back to the present, Wally battles it out with Savitar to the best of his abilities, even enlisting the help of Batman and Superman to take this baddie down. And it’s here where Wally is shown to be not only faster than Superman, but exponentially so.
Being the first to attack Savitar as he pops out of the Speed Force portal, Superman starts to throw jabs at the villain as fast as he can, resulting in Savitar easily dodging each and every blow and taking out Superman in an instant. Doing the same to the rest of the heroes present with ease, Wally is suddenly struck by a Speed Force surge that overpowers him to the nth degree; officially making him faster than Big Blue could ever be. Unbelieving of Wally’s new sense of speed, Savitar downplays Wally’s power, only for Wally to give Savitar “a three-second head start” to show him how much faster he is now compared to not only Savitar, but Superman as well!
Now in a normal scenario, three seconds might not seem like all that big of a head start, but for a speedster as fast as Savitar, that’s quite literally miles he can put between him and Wally before Wally even hits the pavement. But, and as this new surge in power has made possible, Wally easily closes the gap and is able to take Savitar down, effectively showing that while Superman couldn’t land a blow on the villain just moments before, Wally is now so much faster that he can chase down a guy that’s already at the peak of his powers without breaking a sweat.
So even though Superman is still way faster than most heroes kicking it around the pages of DC Comics, he’s got nothing on the new Wally West version of the Flash and his absurdly fast brand of speed. Suffice it to say, the next time Superman and Flash decide to race, Supes best hope it isn’t Wally West under the mask, because as proven here, he simply won’t be able to keep up.
