The Flash Was Created By [SPOILER], Not An 'Accident' - Screen Rant

At this point, most comic fans know how Barry Allen got the powers that would lead him to become the Flash. One fateful night a lightning bolt and some chemicals combined to give him superpowers. However, one oft-forgotten comic tried to change the real reason behind his powers - and it was immediately ignored.

Barry is no stranger to having new elements added to his superpower's origin. In 1988's Secret Origins Annual #2, it was revealed that Barry actually became the lightning that gave him his powers. As the Speed Force was later introduced, his origin became even richer, somewhat more complicated, but at the very least, somewhat explainable. Before that, though, the Flash's origins were retconned severely in a story that didn't have a lasting impact.

Flash #167 (1967) attempted to make a dramatic retcon to Barry's speed powers. In the issue, the Flash's body aura wears off during a fight with smugglers. Wondering why his powers are changing, Barry runs into Mopee - a bizarre-looking man who says he's 'initiate tenth class of the heavenly help-mates.' Mopee explains that he was the one of gave Barry his powers. He claims to have deliberately brought the lightning bold down to him, after being assigned by his superiors to grant someone on Earth super-speed. He's later told by those superiors, that Barry's powers are invalid since he didn't own the chemicals that gave him his speed.

Mopee gets the Flash to buy the same chemicals that were struck by lightning on the night he got his powers and together, they recreate the moment that gives him his powers. Before Barry can tell Mopee about Kid Flash also get his powers the same way, he flies off into the night. The whole issue is deeply bizarre, as it's not clear whether it was supposed to be taken seriously or it's some kind of joke. Regardless, Mopee and his secret origins didn't last. Marvel editor Tom Brevoort discussed the retcon on his blog, where he called the comic a "travesty."

Mopee was meant to be comical, but he was instead embarrassing, and the whole story was brushed under the carpet without a single glance back. Gardner Fox, creator of the original Flash, and Carmine Infantino were responsible for this travesty.

It's hard to argue with Brevoort's assessment. Flash #167 is a weird read that doesn't make a lot of sense. And, if Mopee and his inclusion to Barry's origins continued, it would have been the most bizarre retcons that ever stuck. Fortunately, the story was quickly forgotten and the Flash would later have a more appropriate origin update. But, in retrospect, you've got to wonder just what exactly DC Comics was trying to accomplish with the issue - it didn't work then and it certainly doesn't now.
