HENDERSON, Ky. – The Ohio Valley League voted Saturday morning to cancel its 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clay Bolin, owner of the Henderson Flash, said the nine teams in the league voted 5-4 in favor of cancellation. The teams' representatives met via video conference and did discuss other options, including delaying the start of the season until either June 19 or July 1 and playing an abbreviated schedule.
"Concerns for everyone’s safety, limitations placed on us by multiple agencies, and the unpredictability of changing conditions led us to ultimately forfeit the 2020 season," OVL president John Bruce said in a statement.
Bolin said he voted against the cancellation at this point. “I’m not necessary opposed to the decision, but I am opposed to cancelling right now. I think it’s a little too early to make a final decision,” he said. “I’d like to see us take a little more time to see if the situation changes. Ultimately, it might still be the same decision.”
With the college baseball players across the country losing most of their spring season when play was halted last month, the summer leagues became even more important for the players this year, Bolin said.
“The basis of our league is for the betterment of the college kids. It’s not for the betterment of the teams or the owners. The decision that was made today was not what is best for the kids right now,” Bolin said.
The Flash was coming off its best season in the three-year history of the program with a regular season championship in the OVL’s Eastern Division. The league was scheduled to begin play May 28 with the season continuing through the end of July.
