The Flash Star Would Have Loved To Work With Superman’s Christopher Reeve - Screen Rant

The Flash star Grant Gustin has now shared he would have loved to work with Christopher Reeve, one of the most acclaimed Superman actors. Reeve’s Superman character has been an inspiration to many generations and is probably the most adored version. He first played Superman in the 1978 film then went on to feature in the sequels, Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. He even made a guest appearance on the WB/CW series Smallville.

Apart from acting, Reeve was quite philanthropic, actively participating in charities like Make-A-Wish Foundation and Save The Children. Reeve had several medical issues including injury-related paralysis after a horse-riding accident and a severe ulcer. After his accident, he launched his own foundation and raised awareness on spinal cord injuries. He met a tragic end to his life at 52 years old after suffering a cardiac arrest while being treated for an ulcer.

In an interview on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside Of You podcast, Gustin expressed his love for Reeve’s version of Superman. Rosenbaum read a fan question asking which historical figure Gustin would wish to meet. The question evoked visible emotion as he reflected on Reeve’s character both on-screen and off-screen which contributed to his admiration for the actor. He stated:

He’s not really a historical figure. I guess he is, kind of, but that was an early hero for me and what happened to him was just so tragic. I know he made a whole second life out of it and was able to inspire all kinds of people and do all kinds of positive things, but it was just awful. I was devastated when he passed away. So if I could have known him in his prime, and even gotten to work with him or something, that would have been a lot to me.

Rosenbaum added that he attended one of Reeve’s foundation events and got to interact with him while presenting him with a blanket signed by the entire Smallville cast.  He showed admiration for the late actor’s strive to do more despite his physical disabilities. After his horse-riding accident, Reeve made impressive efforts in destigmatizing paralysis. The research center, which he co-founded with The University of California, Irvine, is currently one of the leading spinal cord injuries research centers in the world.

Though there have been several Arrowverse crossovers between The Flash and Superman, we’ll never know what a Reeve/Gustin project would have looked like. Gustin has interacted with three different Superman actors over the years, including Rosenbaum's Smallville costar Tom Welling, Tyler Hoechlin, and Brandon Routh. It stands to reason the undeniable talent between Gustin and Reeve may have also sparked something great.
