Marion County employees will receive federally funded, premium back pay for working through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Marion County Quorum Court on Tuesday night approved allocating $499,761 for the payments, which will be paid out to employees in the coming weeks.
Funds for the premium pay come from the American Rescue Plan Act, which was passed by Congress in March.

The amount of premium pay each county employee will receive is based on a formula of $3.35 per hour worked during the 10-month period between Feb. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020. The county coroner and justices of the peace will also receive premium pay, with their portion being a flat 15% of their gross pay during that 10-month window.

The premium pay will be awarded to those currently employed by the county. Workers that served during that 10-month window but have since left the county's employment will not qualify for the payment.

About 100 county employees will qualify for the premium pay, Judge John Massey said Tuesday night. The county usually employs about 120 when at full strength, but currently has slightly more than 100 employees on its payroll.

The federally funded premium pay was awarded to any county employee involved in regular in-person interactions or regular physical handling of items that were also handled by others.
