Warning: contains a preview of Flash #776!
After agreeing to aid the Justice League Dark, the Flash just discovered he's in a comic book, gaining the meta awareness that has made Deadpool so miserable (and funny) over in Marvel Comics. Lately, the Justice League Dark have been pushing at the very fabric of reality, even finding their own comic script within a library possessing every book in existence throughout the multiverse. But with the godlike Eclipso having recently returned to Earth, they're taking things further than ever, as Doctor Fate makes Wally West aware he's in a comic, and even points out you, the reader.
After a magic glaive fell to Earth and began inspiring the worst impulses of everyone around it, Flash faced off against an army of villains, only for the energy vampire Starbreaker to acquire the weapon and become possessed by Eclipso, who was imprisoned within. A major villain and the former Angel of Vengeance, Eclipso has dark plans for the DC Universe, and no sooner had he flown off to enact his plans than Doctor Fate yanked Flash though a portal, telling the Scarlet Speedster that he's the planet's only hope.
Now, in a preview of Flash #776 shared by AIPT, Wally and Doctor Fate, aka Khalid Nassour, find themselves at a demonic crossroads, racing to beat Eclipso to his goal. But as the two heroes discuss their strategy, Doctor Fate shares the bombshell that only the reader will be able to help them navigate the danger ahead.
While Wally is initially doubtful of Fate's claims, Khalid casts a spell that causes him to recognize reality and, like Deadpool before him, Flash realizes he's in a comic. But while Deadpool is often aware that he's part of a narrative - using that knowledge to predict events and even sometimes change "reality" around him - it seems that Wally West can now see out of the page, staring at the reader and asking, "How are they watching us?"
It's possible the issue will depend on some kind of reader choice (much like the recent short story "The Riddle" from Batman Black and White #5), but the concept is also likely a loving homage to 1966's Flash #163, which famously has cover art in which Flash seemingly begs the reader to buy his comic, claiming his life depends on it (the story inside reveals things aren't quite as they seem.) This time, Wally really does see the reader, though at least he's been shown the truth by a friendly face - unlike Deadpool, who had to hear the big news from Loki.
Coming from writer Jeremy Adams and artist Fernando Pasarin, Flash #776 will see the Fastest Man Alive finally get to 'meet' his readers. It's unlikely DC Comics will make this a permanent change, and Fate's magic may ultimately erase this uncomfortable truth for Wally's own good, but with the power to vibrate between the different planes of existence, it's also possible that Flash could become as comfortable with breaking the fourth wall as Deadpool before him - either way, fans can find out when the issue hits retailers November 23.
