The Flash: Armageddon Kills a Legends of Tomorrow Mainstay | CBR - CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash, Season 8, Episode 2, "Armageddon, Part 2," which aired Tuesday November 23rd on The CW.

The second part of The Flash's "Armageddon" event deals some pretty heavy blows to Barry Allen -- he begins to have rage-filled blackouts, his team is forced to evacuate S.T.A.R. Labs and he finds out that Joe West has been dead for six months. However, Joe's death is not the only one that Team Flash is forced to reckon with, as "Armageddon, Part 2" also kills off Gideon, a character who has been around since Season One and has also crossed over to Legends of Tomorrow.

Gideon is an artificial intelligence who first appeared in the first episode of The Flash, in which she showed Harrison Wells (really Eobard Thawne) his newspaper from the future. Since then, Gideon has made semi-frequent appearances in S.T.A.R. Labs' Time Vault, with her ownership being turned over to Team Flash after Thawne's death. Another version of Gideon also appears in Legends of Tomorrow, having served as the Waverider's artificial intelligence for years before finally acquiring a human body.

"Armageddon, Part 2" opens with the alien Despero warning Barry that he will experience a number of events that will cause him to begin losing his mind over the next 24 hours. The alien's prediction proves accurate, as Barry is faced with a powerful new metahuman foe that seemingly causes him to black out and attack his friends, as well as the city at large. Barry and the team return to S.T.A.R. Labs to begin working on a cure for his condition.

Unfortunately for Team Flash, a group of government agents suddenly burst in before they can start doing anything. The head agent tells them that there was a radiation leak detected, and that they need to evacuate and destroy the building. While everyone else gathers their things, Barry goes to the Time Vault and activates Gideon, telling her to conceal anything that could tie Barry Allen to The Flash.

Gideon activates a number of holographic projections throughout S.T.A.R. Labs that manage to deceive the teams sweeping through the building. Barry then orders Gideon to wipe the lab's servers and memory banks, and the artificial intelligence tells him that doing so means that she would have to erase herself as well. Barry reluctantly tells her to do it, and he and Gideon share a brief goodbye before she wipes everything, with S.T.A.R. Labs being completely taken over by the government shortly afterwards.

The "death" of Gideon marks the first of two deaths revealed in "Armageddon, Part 2", but it is the only one that audiences see happen. Her final scene with Barry is made even more emotional when one recalls that she once mentioned that Barry was the one who created her in the first place. Gideon has been around since the show's very first episode, helping Barry and the team with their various time travel-related shenanigans, so her death is definitely a major blow. With both their base and their trusty A.I. gone, Team Flash will be up against some pretty steep odds if they want to stop Barry from turning evil.
