Why Reverse-Flash Could Be Flash's Real Armageddon Villain - Screen Rant

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Flash season 8, episode 1.

Before everything is said and done, the team may discover that Reverse-Flash is the real villain behind The Flash’s “Armageddon” event. Tony Curran’s Despero was teased as the event’s main antagonist, but a big twist in the first chapter indicated his mission is actually to save the Earth – not destroy or conquer it. If the crossover's real villain isn't Despero, it may instead be one of its confirmed Arrowverse guest characters, such as Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne, AKA Reverse-Flash.

While Despero is Team Flash’s primary threat right now, the bigger picture is that the Earth may be destroyed in 2031 because of a different character’s actions. Supposedly, the Scarlet Speedster is the one who will doom everyone and bring about Armageddon in 2031. Of course, no one on Team Flash sees that as a real possibility. Barry has seven days to change Despero’s mind about him. Looking at the story “Armageddon” has crafted, it appears that the real problem they’re facing isn’t Despero himself – but figuring out what caused Armageddon and how they can stop it coming to pass.

Even if it’s true that Barry somehow causes this catastrophic event, it’s unlikely he would have set it in motion under his own will. Instead, it wouldn’t come as a big surprise it was revealed that Reverse-Flash is the real villain behind Armageddon. After all, The CW has already confirmed Cavanaugh’s return as Reverse-Flash in the Arrowverse's “Armageddon” event, so he will indeed play a role in the story. Being the crossover’s true antagonist could very well be it. Plus, it would fit with his motivations. Transforming Barry into the Earth’s greatest villain certainly sounds like a plan he would relish.

Reverse-Flash has always hated Barry, and his grudge against him was likely made stronger by the humiliating defeat he suffered in The Flash season 7 finale. Much to his shock, Eobard discovered during their fight his speed could no longer compare to Barry’s. However, that doesn’t mean Barry should count him out in The Flash season 8. When Reverse-Flash returns in “Armageddon,” they may find out he’s the one who engineers the planet’s destruction in the future. As for how he could be the mastermind, it’s possible that in the years ahead, Eobard will find a way to corrupt Barry’s Speed Force, thus turning him evil. Or, it may be he was impersonating Barry in the same way that he’s been wearing Harrison Wells’ face for years.

For Reverse-Flash, such a plan could be the perfect revenge against Barry in The Flash season 8. If he succeeded, it would mean that he single-handedly destroyed Barry’s reputation as a hero and made him into a villain. Since his goals have always been more about ruining Barry than about beating him in physical combat, this could be an ideal revenge scheme for a character like Reverse-Flash. If Reverse-Flash is the real villain behind Armageddon, put the blame on Barry and kicked off his battle with Despero, that would erase any lingering doubts he is and always will be Barry’s greatest enemy in the Arrowverse.
