The Flash Season 8 Arrogantly Forgets About Savitar | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Flash season 8, episode 1.

The big twist in The Flash season 8 premiere ignores the threat that Savitar posed to the Arrowverse during season 3. In the first of five installments in The Flash’s “Armageddon” crossover event, Barry (Grant Gustin) learned a shocking detail about his future. Supposedly, it’s the Flash – and not the crossover’s main villain – that’s the subject of the show’s Armageddon plot. According to Despero (Tony Curran), Barry will be responsible for causing the end of the world in 2031.

Despero, who has been to this time period, explained the Protector of Central City will turn evil and become a villain. Of course, Barry has been reassured by characters like Iris (Candace Patton) and Ray (Brandon Routh) that there’s no way Despero could be right about Barry’s future. Looking at everything that Barry has done for Central City (and the world) in the Arrowverse, there’s a belief that there’s nothing that could ever happen that would transform the Scarlet Speedster into the dangerous villain that Despero claims him to be.

Although Team Flash has good reasons for having confidence in him, there is one problem with this they haven't thought to consider. The Flash season 8 has seemingly forgotten about Savitar. In season 3, it was discovered that their greatest enemy at the time – Savitar – was actually a time remnant of Barry. He felt abandoned by Team Flash, who treated him differently since they didn’t regard him as the true Barry Allen. Driven by resentment and anger, the time remnant evolved into Savitar and developed a grudge against Barry and his team.

While it’s true that Barry himself didn’t become Savitar, it is important to note the time remnant was an extension of him who at one point shared his moral compass, love for his friends and family and more. Despite all of that, he was able to turn his back on his principles and even murdered innocent people. What this means is that despite Barry’s heroic reputation, there are versions of the character that hold the potential for evil. The team overlooked Savitar in the season 8 premiere when discussing the possibility of the Flash causing Armageddon, presumably because he was a time remnant and not the real Barry Allen. However, how the time remnant descended down a dark path may be a sign that Barry becoming a villain isn’t impossible.

Team Flash is justified for having faith in their friend in The Flash season 8, but at the same time, their history with Savitar is certainly relevant to the problem they’re facing. How far Barry has come as a hero makes it hard to imagine any tragedy causing him to destroy the world, though at the same time, season 3's Savitar provides proof that such scenarios – no matter how unlikely they may seem – are plausible. The team should consider every possibility in The Flash season 8.
