Barry Allen, better known as The Flash, is the proud father of twins with super-speed, but are they heroic or villainous? The Flash is no stranger to parenthood, and even The Flash television show introduced his daughter from the future, Nora West-Allen. However, in the comics, Barry Allen has a different set of children -- twins named Don and Dawn Allen.
Don and Dawn, otherwise known as the Tornado Twins, first appeared in Adventure Comics #373, released in 1968, where they came into conflict with the Legion of Super-Heroes. Though initially suspicious of the twins (given the speed at which they would solve crimes), the Legion later learned that they were indeed the heroic descendants of Barry Allen. Born after Barry's heroic death in the famous Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, the still-pregnant Iris West-Allen had moved to the 30th century to live their lives away from superheroics. Not only did it prevent the twins from pursuing superhero careers, but were forced to do so without ever knowing their father. But that may be about to change, thanks to newly teased DC Comics.
The Twins would not reappear in comic books until the 1990s, when they met the Wally West incarnation of the Flash for the first time. After a brutal fight with the villain Savitar, Wally West was flung into the 30th century where he met Don and Dawn, prior to their deeds as the Tornado Twins. Though the twins were initially jealous of Wally, as they believed he had a proper father/son relationship with Barry while the twins never did, Wally inspired them to use their speed for good. After Wally returned to his own time period with the help of the Allen siblings, Don and Dawn went on to become the Tornado Twins, further cementing their place as heroes in continuity. While the twins did not make a major appearance in comic books afterwards, Don went on to become the father of Bart Allen, better known as Impulse, and Dawn became the mother of future Legion of Superheroes member XS. However, the twins are set to reemerge in The Flash comic in a big way in the near future.
Readers of The Flash will remember the surprising appearance of Don and Dawn in Issue #26, with Eobard Thawne showing Barry and Iris a nightmare future in which the Tornado twins lay waste to Central City. The story also marked the first official appearance of old man Barry Allen, future Flash. The modern-day Barry refused to believe that his absence was the only reasons for the twins to become evil Rogues, certain that his nemesis Reverse-Flash was hiding the truth. Making things even more complicated, the future timeline of that old Barry was apparently destroyed by the young hero's own actions (kicking the current Paradox storyline into action). So if the Barry Allen of that reality is dead... shouldn't the rest of the timeline be erased, too?
Unfortunately, it may not be that simple. Official solicitations for The Flash #758 claim the Tornado Twins will return, seemingly corrupted, and attacking Barry in the present day. This would seemingly mark the first non-alternate-reality appearance of the tornado twins in decades, during which continuity for DC comics has changed multiple times, often altering established DC comics history. The largest change in continuity came in 2011 with DC's New 52, a complete line-wide reboot that reconnected major story-lines and removed several characters from DC history, with the Tornado Twins being included among them. During the New 52, Barry Allen was not in a relationship with Iris, and the Bart Allen introduced had a completely different backstory then the original character, making the twins' return incredibly unlikely.
With the DC Rebirth relaunch in 2016, many elements from before the New 52 reboot have been reinserted. Though Don and Dawn had not made a proper appearance in this new timeline until now, the slow reintroduction of older Flash elements made it a certainty that they would return. However, with their seemingly villainous turn in this new timeline, it begs the question as to whether the Tornado Twins are truly villains, corrupted heroes, or something else?
While it seems unlikely that DC would change the twins personality to a large extent, it would be an interesting alteration to the characters. Given that most DC characters post-Rebirth have retained their former personalities, changing two typically heroic characters would show that DC is okay with not completely adhering to the old continuity. Furthermore, such a development could lead to interesting story-lines with Barry Allen further down the line. The DC Rebirth incarnation of Barry Allen only remembers some elements of his life prior to the New 52, such as the original Wally West, but has made no mention of remembering his children. For Barry, to not only learn that he had children, but to fight them as enemies in the same encounter, could result in some interesting character development. Since the twins have not had a real relationship or interaction with their father in any timeline or continuity, that could fuel, or outright motivate, their hatred for their father and be the motive for their attack.
That being said, the Tornado Twins have been heroes in all of their incarnations, and will most likely continue to fight against evil, rather then alongside it. Many fan-favorite characters have made a return to the DC Universe, even obscure characters like the Wonder Twins have made an appearance, and have done so with little or no alterations to their personality. It is possible that the twins have been brainwashed or manipulated by an established Flash villain, such as the Reverse Flash or Gorilla Grodd. Given that the title of the storyline is "Legion of Zoom," it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that Reverse Flash has some influence over the twins' actions. Perhaps these twins are from an alternate Earth, an alternate timeline, or both.
Whatever the case may be, whether they are ultimately heroes or villains, the Flash will still have to contend with his children when The Flash #758 releases.
