As the Silver Age incarnation of The Flash, Barry Allen is one of the pillars of the DC Universe. He's as a co-founder of the Justice League of America and the hero who introduced the concept of the DC Multiverse through a team-up with Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick. Most famously, Barry heroically sacrificed his life to save the Multiverse during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a death that remained in place for decades until his eventual resurrection during Final Crisis, where he helped save the Multiverse from Darkseid.
However, even before Barry's full-fledged return, DC hinted at the return of the Silver Age Scarlet Speedster multiple times over the course of his successor Wally West's tenure as the Flash. Now, here are some of the most memorable times Barry almost returned ahead of Final Crisis.
The Return of Barry Allen
As Wally defended Central City as its Scarlet Speedster, he and Golden Age Flash Jay Garrick were shocked by the sudden, apparent resurrection of Barry in Mark Waid and Greg LaRocque's classic 1996 storyline "The Return of Barry Allen." While Wally and Jay were overjoyed to be reunited with their fallen friend, it was clear that things were not as they initially appeared when it was revealed Barry was actually the evil Reverse-Flash in an elaborate disguise to destroy the Flash Family and its legacy.
The storyline also saw the return of the speedster superhero Max Mercury -- a reimagined incarnation of the Golden Age hero Quicksilver -- who played a vital role in turning the tide against the Reverse-Flash and help introduce the concept of the Speed Force to Wally and his friends as they defeated Barry's greatest foe.
Underworld Unleashed
The 1995 comic book crossover event Underworld Unleashed, by Mark Waid and Howard Porter, saw the demon Neron offer the superheroes and villains of the DCU their deepest, darkest wishes in exchange for their mortal souls. With many heroes and villains accepting Neron's offer, the Lord of Hell approached Wally with his own proposition in Underworld Unleashed #2: In exchange for Wally's soul, Neron would resurrect Barry Allen.
As tempting as the offer to be reunited with his friend and mentor was, Wally soundly refused Neron's offer. While many of the Flash's rogues would be turned against him, it was ultimately Shazam who stopped Neron once and for all, by tricking the devil at his own game and purging the DCU of his hellish influence.
Infinite Crisis
Over the course of his adventures, Wally learned that Barry would reappear to aid him in the three most difficult days of his entire life. The first of these was to help him take on his own Reverse-Flash, Zoom, but the second had Barry briefly return during Geoff Johns, George Perez and Phil Jimenez's Infinite Crisis, with the entire DC Multiverse at stake. As Superboy-Prime singlehandedly massacred the Titans after losing control of his powers, the speedsters would attempt to contain the maddened villain within the Speed Force itself. While Jay Garrick's age led to him to falter, Barry emerged from the Speed Force to grab Superboy-Prime and urge his grandson Bart Allen to continue to run.
Barry's brief return during Infinite Crisis would set the stage for his full resurrection years later. Eobard Thawne used his advanced, futuristic technology to reawaken Barry's consciousness in the moment he emerged to aid Bart and partially ground him outside of the Speed Force. After emerging to help Wally on the third hardest day of his life in Final Crisis, Barry discovered he was back in the land of the living for good, albeit with Eobard Thawne waiting for him in the wings.
