Stargirl will feature a couple of cameos from The Flash and Green Lantern in its first episode, but these classic Justice Society of America (JSA) members will only appear in a picture. Debuting first on DC Universe before it airs on The CW, Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, a young teen who discovers a powerful staff and uses it to become a superhero.
Along with Courtney becoming Stargirl and forming a new JSA, the DC Comics show will also feature flashbacks to the JSA of the past. This team includes heroes like Hourman (Lou Ferrigno, Jr.), Wildcat (Brian Stapf), and Doctor Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas), as well as Starman (Joel McHale) - the first hero to wield the Cosmic Staff and whose sidekick, Stripesy aka Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), would later become Courtney's stepfather. In Stargirl's present, this version of the JSA has long since retired, but during a flashback to the past, a couple of the JSA's most famous members make an appearance, albeit only in a photograph.
In an interview with IGN, Stargirl executive producer and co-creator, Geoff Johns shared the tidbit about Flash and Green Lantern's photographic cameos (which can also be glimpsed in Stargirl's trailer), clarifying exactly which versions of the characters they are and why it is fans shouldn't expect either hero to show up in the flesh anytime soon.
[Green Lantern and Flash] are spoken of and they exist in the JSA. There's a picture of them in the first episode, and there's plans in the future for things, but Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, to me, are always the elderly statesmen. They're the big heroes of the JSA and their shadow is very long and they're great characters. They are a part of the original JSA and their legacies will be felt throughout the show. I don't want to spoil too much about it, but I can leave it at that.
The Jay Garrick version of The Flash has already appeared on The CW's The Flash played by John Welsey Shipp, but Stargirl takes place on Earth-2 of Arrowverse's multiverse, not Earth-Prime, so it's unlikely Shipp is the Jay Garrick-Flash in the photo. As for Alan Scott's Green Lantern, no Arrowverse or other recent DC Comics TV show has featured a Green Lantern in any prominent role. During Crisis on Infinite Earths, a universe within the new multiverse is revealed as being home to the Green Lantern Corps, but that's more of a tease for the upcoming HBO Max Green Lantern series and the scene only reuses footage from 2011's Green Lantern.
In which case, whenever Stargirl gets around to exploring these two JSA elder statesman, it'll most likely be brand new actors in the roles. They might be the actors in the photograph seen in Stargirl's premiere episode, but it's more likely the roles haven't yet been cast and the photograph simply uses stand-ins for the time being. Fans will know more when Stargirl premieres May 18 on DC Universe and airs the following day on The CW.
