‘Flash audience’ helping folk musicians behind N.J.-based music organization - nj.com

The venues may have closed and the concerts have been cancelled. But the music continues, even in the comfort of a musician’s home.

Amid the statewide shutdown to slow the spread of coronavirus, musicians have had to get creative as their live performances and concerts continue to be postponed or outright cancelled. Plenty of performers have resorted to playing via broadcasts and livestreams.

But it’s those live performances that the musicians lean on for their livelihood and, without an audience or a way to make ends meet, those musicians are struggling as the isolation continues.

The Folk Project, an organization of acoustic, folk and Americana musicians and audiences based in Morris County that has been in operation for nearly half a century, is hoping to have found a solution for that issue while venues and all non-essential businesses and buildings have closed.

The non-profit organization rounded up audience members and, at 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday night, contributes to a performer that had their live performances and income affected by the shutdowns.

Mark Schaffer, the special events chairman of the project, said the community has attended seven online concerts with anywhere from 100 to 230 people and have donated an average of a thousand dollars.

“They really are special,” Schaffer said. "We love supporting them and we’ve been broken hearted for them to have totally lost their income. Zero income, everything is cancelled. I can’t imagine what it does to these people that I love admired.''

The Folk Project is referring to it as a ‘flash audience,’ alluding to flash mobs where a group of people suddenly assemble mainly for entertainment purposes. Schaffer had been looking for an idea after he and his wife were on a February cruise in China and had been well aware of COVID-19 before it started leaving a sizable impression in the United States.

The flash audience came to life after Schaffer heard a similar idea on a National Public Radio podcast. The overall program has been dubbed by The Folk Project as ‘The Acoustic Stayaway.'

“These people mean a lot to me,” Schaffer said. "We all play guitar and sing and song write. But there are few of us tat can get this to an art level. We all aspire to achieve a level of art that these people, too.

“We decided we could bring the audience to them. We’re bringing them people. It’s free concerts on donations but it’s been successful.”

In addition to the flash audience, The Folk Project also offers guitar workshops, a songwriters’ discussion group and a song-sharing conference group.
