CW's hit television series, The Flash, has incorporated many reoccurring characters with various skillsets and motivations. With such a successful run, it's worth taking a look at how these DC characters have developed thus far in the series. While some have grown, others have had lackluster character growth; however, in regards to certain characters, the lack of character growth is actually to the show's benefit.
10 Has Grown: Barry Allen
As the main character of The Flash and the person behind the "Flash" persona, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) has surely grown throughout the series. By coping with the loss of his mother, the imprisonment of his father, the responsibility to the Speedforce, and carrying the weight of Central City on his metahuman shoulders, Barry Allen has gone from a highly-skilled crime-scene investigator to Central City's most regarded speedster. With his motivation on bringing justice to Central City, Barry has grown leaps and bounds throughout the show.
9 Hasn't Grown: Eobard Thawne
Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh), is known to be the Flash's iconic antagonist. While there were moments of mentorship between the two speedsters (particularly in the first season), Thawne doesn't grow from his manipulative ways. Instead, he continues to find ways to best his ultimate foe, Barry Allen, even pulling The Flash's daughter, Nora West-Allen, into the web of deceit.
A cunning trickster, Eobard Thawne remains a steadfast villain in The Flash and leaves audiences constantly questioning his motives every time he is inserted into the plot.
8 Has Grown: Caitlin Snow
Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) has had her fair share of growing experiences throughout the seasons of The Flash. At the start of the show, Snow was a brilliant bio-engineer coping with the loss of her fiancé, Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), amid the particle accelerator accident. As the seasons progressed, Snow discovered her alter-ego, Killer Frost, and went on a quest of self-discovery to not only cope with her polar opposite alternate identity but also to embrace her presence in Snow's life. This has been an ongoing conflict throughout The Flash, and during this character arc, audiences have seen Caitlin Snow unpack her past and embrace her present.
7 Hasn't Grown: Jesse Wells
Jesse Wells (Violett Beane), daughter of Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) of Earth-2, may have become a speedster and fallen in (and out of) love, but that doesn't mean the character has grown very much since her start in The Flash. Yes, she was quick to adapt to her newfound superhero powers, but overall, audiences have not seen enough of the character to gauge the growth within her character arc since she left Team Flash on Earth-1 to return to Earth-2.
6 Has Grown: Cisco Ramon
Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) is the quirky mechanical engineering genius of S.T.A.R. Labs. This character underwent an extreme amount of growth throughout the series. Originally starting as comedic relief and a supporting character through Barry Allen's transition into the Flash, the character grew exceptionally fast when he was discovered to be a metahuman, of which Barry Allen named, "Vibe."
At this stage in the show, Cisco Ramon learned what it meant to be a superhero, and he took his duties quite seriously. He even went so far as to "kill" Vibe (with Nora West-Allen's help) to save the day. Once Ramon was able to control his powers fully, he decided to take the cure that Caitlin Snow developed to rid himself of his superpowers. In this character arc, Cisco Ramon grew drastically compared to other arcs.
5 Hasn't Grown: Cecile Horton
Despite gaining new superpowers, marrying Joe West, and having a baby, Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet) has not grown too much throughout the show. This strong character has always had a fiery personality and a quick wit. She's a character that commands the room and can always give her perspective. Horton is one of the strongest female characters on The Flash, and she has always been a confident character in general. That said, due to her initial strength upon entry into the series, the show hasn't incorporated much growth beyond that. Yes, her confidence faltered after returning to the workforce, but Horton is back to the confident boss she started as.
4 Has Grown: Ralph Dibny
Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer) is a character that has shifted on his alignment since the start of his run on The Flash. He was first introduced to the series as a fallen Central City ex-cop that made a career change into a not-so-standup private investigator. Since joining Team Flash, audiences have seen the character grow extensively into an honorable person and valued member of the team.
3 Hasn't Grown: Joe West
One could argue that the ultimate patriarch and devoted detective of Central City PD, Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), hasn't grown much since the start of the series. Sure, he's become more accepting of the show's metahuman reality and Detective West has even grown in terms of letting his daughter, Iris, marry Barry Allen, but overall Joe West has remained a constant character within the series. Always looking for the good in people, he has been a voice of reason for other the main characters (Barry Allen in particular) and insists on a job well-done from the Team Flash. While Joe West hasn't grown very much throughout the show, it's not a bad thing. He serves as mentor and father-figure and the other characters thrive off of this man's consistency within the series.
2 Has Grown: Nora West-Allen
Nora West-Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy) is first seen having traveled back in time to help her dad, Barry Allen, save Central City from Clifford DeVoe's (Neil Sandilands) apocalyptic waves of destruction. Initially, she idolizes her father and condemns present-day Iris West-Allen, her mother, for the choices the matriarch makes in the future. Throughout Nora West-Allen's experiences with younger and more present variations of her parents, the character acknowledges that mistakes are made, even when they are decided with the best intentions (such as her partnership with Eobard Thawne), that memories may be fickle, and that she has more control over her life than she initially believed possible. Toward the end of her character arc, Nora West-Allen learns to accept Barry and Iris for the humans they are.
1 Hasn't Grown: Wally West
Whether it be from lack of screentime or just the character dynamic, in comparison to the rest of the characters of The Flash, Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) has not grown much. Yes, he learned to accept the Wests as his family, and, yes, the character went off on his adventure to discover himself, but audiences haven't seen the supposed growth from Wally West since his intermittent return to the show. Surely, the character has grown; The Flash mentions this self-discovery growth in passing, but without much to draw from in terms of on-screen actions, audiences can't tell.
