Great Comic Book Detectives: Can Flash Outrun An Explosion 2,000 Miles Away? - CBR - Comic Book Resources

This is the Great Comic Book Detectives, where readers send in requests for the names of comic books that they remembered reading years ago and I try to find them for them! Send any future requests to brianc@cbr.com!

Reader Fritz P. wrote in to ask:

It is a Flash issue which I have blanked on. I want to say from the 80s but I'm not sure. The storyline I am also not too familiar with but the Flash is on the phone with a friend or lawyer when a bomb goes off in that person's house.

The next few panels are of Flash running across town faster than the explosion to save his friend from what was certain death. That is pretty much all I remember besides the over-the-top physics defying chutzpa of that period! Comics were fun then!

I have been searching on-and-off for that issue about 10 years now. My local comic shop experts don't recall that story and it was such a long time ago I haven't been able to find it in the collected trades or back issue bins. Which are bag & boarded anyway!

If you recall such a story and can source it out that would be one to check off my comics bucket-list!

What's funny is that I instantly had an answer for this one, but it turned out that I was wrong. I was off...by three issues! For whatever reason, Cary Bates had TWO major explosions involving lawyers within issues of each other. The one that I remembered, the lawyer actually sort of saved herself (she was in a bathtub, protecting her from the rubble as well as it could) and Flash just had to get her out from underneath the rubble. Three issues earlier, however, we had this story.

Towards the end of Flash's ongoing series (before he sacrificed himself in the pages of Crisis on Infinite Earths), Flash writer/editor Cary Bates had a storyline where the Flash was on trial for manslaughter for when he killed the Reverse Flash during a fight. In Flash #332 (by Cary Bates, Joey Cavalieri, Carmine Infantino and Frank McLaughlin), the Flash has gone missing and calls up his lawyer, Peter Farley (who was also Barry Allen's old college roommate) as soon as he can, but while on the phone, he hears his lawyer's office explode!

The opening of the following issue is a striking sequence featuring the Flash finding a way to get to his lawyer's office before the brunt of the explosion's force hits the man...

He's still badly injured, but he survives. He can't be Flash's lawyer anymore, but he at least lived.

There ya go, Fritz!

Okay, that's it for this installment of the Great Comic Book Detectives! If anyone else has a story that they'd like me to track down, drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com!
