He's the Fastest Man Alive. The Scarlet Speedster. The Crimson Comet. You probably know him best as Flash. As the best-known speedster in comics, DC's quickest hero has saved his city, and the world, more times than anyone can count. From battles with the Rogues to destroying the anti-matter canon and saving Multiverse in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Flash always does the right thing and saves the day.
But could he do more? With all his power, are there things Flash could be helping with that he doesn't? Yes, normal humans can't always count on the superheroes to help them, but as Barry Allen, Flash is as mortal as anyone else, and with the ability to move faster than light, he could solve a whole lot of problems. Here are ten things the Flash should do with his powers.
10 Power The World
Have you seen those stationary bikes that are powered by your peddling? The more you pedal, the more electricity it creates to keep the bike's LEDs all lit up? Imagine if Flash got on one of those and peddled as fast as he could for a minute. The amount of electricity he would generate could power the world for weeks, if not months.
Just a minute out of his day spent peddling on a specially made stationary bike, and Flash could put an end to the energy crisis, not to mention how helpful it would be in the fight against climate change!
9 Run For Good Causes
Charity marathons are popular. You go around to your friends, family, and neighbors and ask them to sponsor you in a 5k. They donate a certain amount of money per mile you run, and then that money gets sent to the charity. These charity runs help millions of people a year. And Flash could run all of them without breaking a sweat.
Who wouldn't want to donate to Flash when he's running in a marathon? From blue-collar workers to billionaires, Flash would bring in the donations, and before any other runner had taken their first step, he could finish twenty of these marathons. It would bring attention to more good causes, and help a whole lot of people.
8 Get A Different Job
While the world sees Flash as a hero, he's also a man. As Barry Allen, he needs money to cover his bills and take Iris out for the occasional night on the town. No one would begrudge him for having to pack away the red suit once in a while to get paid, but Barry's day job as a Crime Scene Investigator takes up a lot of time.
Instead of working 70 hour weeks in the lab, Barry could become the world's greatest close-up magic TV host and rake in millions. Plus, it would give him more time to fight crime, and the more time the Flash is out on the streets, the less time Central City's CSI will need to spend trying to solve cases.
7 Play Some Pranks
Not everything Flash could do needs to be a grand gesture. As the Fastest Man Alive, he could have some fun messing with his fellow heroes. In the blink of an eye, Batman is suddenly wearing a princess outfit over his bat-suit. Superman suddenly has a handlebar mustache drawn on his face during the next Justice League meeting. Guys like Hawkman and Dr. Fate are just begging to have "Kick Me" signs taped to their backs!
Obviously, whatever pranks Flash plays on his pals would be harmless fun, but that would be the beauty of it. Being a superhero is stressful work, and having something to laugh at would help keep the heroes happy.
6 Revolutionize Storage and Shipping
When he became Flash, Barry Allen invented a formula that would allow him to shrink his costume and keep it in a ring. This is the kind of technology that would greatly change the world. The liquid Barry created only works on clothes, but even that would be a big deal if he shared his invention with the world. Imagine how much space we could all save if we could shrink our extra bed sheets, blankets, and towels to the side of a stamp? Suddenly storing your winter coats in the summer is way easier too.
And for the retail industry, this would be gigantic - no pun intended. A shipment that would normally fill up the trailer of an 18-wheeler can suddenly fit in the glove compartment of a Toyota. The savings, both financial and ecological, would be amazing.
5 Read More
With the ability to live a lifetime in the blink of an eye, there's no reason Flash shouldn't be the most well-read hero in the DC universe. Previous Flashes, like Jay Garrick, used their speed to read every book in the world, helping them have a head full of "Flash Facts" that they could use to solve mysteries. These days, Barry Allen spends his time listening to podcasts at superspeed.
Podcasts are great, but they aren't as good for learning new information as a good old fashioned book. Barry needs to listen to less Word Balloon with John Siuntres and read more.
4 Learn To Fight
Being able to move at the speed of light makes it really hard for someone like Captain Cold to hit Flash, but when the hero is facing off against other speedsters like Reverse Flash or Godspeed, he's basically going mano a mano with someone has fast as he is. Suddenly, his main advantage is gone. That's why taking some fighting lessons could be helpful.
You may think that learning some fighting techniques could be rough for Flash, but Wally West took the time to train in martial arts when he took over for Barry, so Barry really has no excuse. Plus, with his ability to share his speed, Barry could scoop up someone like Nightwing and get in a good training session in less than a minute.
3 Clean Up The Streets
Flash does a great job cleaning the streets of baddies like Grodd or Rainbow Raider, but that's not the only kind of trash out there. With his ability to criss-cross the globe in a nanosecond, Flash could grab a broom and clean up all the litter out there. This would help stop the issue of plastics entering the oceans through our sewage systems, which is something Aquaman would probably appreciate. Plus, it would just help make city streets look better, and a cleaner city is a happier city. Just look at the quality of life for the people in Metropolis compared to the people of Gotham.
2 Be Santa Claus
Wears a red suit. Has a big heart. Can travel the world in a single night. These are three things that Flash shares with another iconic figure, Santa Claus. Flash could bring millions of children across the globe a whole lot of happiness by delivering toys, socks, or whatever each kid needs one night every year. All he would need to do is talk his pal Batman into shelling out some cash to cover the costs. What would be a herculean task for anyone else is just a simple job for Barry.
1 Advance Science
While he may have studied chemistry in school, Flash is clearly a talented inventor. The guy created the Cosmic Treadmill, a time machine built out of a piece of home exercise equipment, in his spare time. Ideas like that could revolutionize modern science in ways we can't even imagine. Instead of keeping his inventions to himself, Barry could be advancing humanity by leaps and bounds. Well, he probably shouldn't share the Cosmic Treadmill - a whole lot of people traveling through time is a bad idea - but if he came up with that in a day, what else could he invent?
