When Will 'The Flash' Season 7 Production Begin? - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

The Flash Season 6 ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic that put Hollywood on ice. But recent developments indicate that the cast and crew will begin production on The Flash Season 7 by summer’s end. Here is what we know so far.

The studio behind ‘The Flash’ has plans to ramp up production this summer

The Flash is among a handful of Vancouver, British Columbia-based shows given the go-ahead to begin shooting with safety protocols in place, according to Deadline. The outlet reported that all series planning to shoot in the production hub must give the actors a minimum 30-day notice and enforce a two-week quarantine once they arrive.

A subsequent report by Deadline noted that smaller crews and required COVID-19 testing are also among the health and safety procedures that studios must follow due to the pandemic. Still, with all of the practices that are necessary to begin filming, the outlet reported that production on The Flash Season 7 will likely be up and running by late August.

Team Flash will look a little different in season 7

Most of the cast will be back to wrap up that doozy of a cliffhanger from The Flash Season 6 finale. One glaring difference will be the absence of Hartley Sawyer.

The actor was fired ahead of season 7 for unearthed tweets he posted prior to working on The Flash. The social media content in question contained misogynistic and racist language that the producers deemed unacceptable. Consequently, Sawyer will not return to reprise his role as Ralph Dibney, aka Elongated Man.

Season 6 left Ralph and his would-be ladylove, Sue Dearbon, with some unfinished business. It remains to be seen whether Natalie Dreyfuss will bring Sue back to The Flash, or if her character will disappear from the canvas.

Although Sawyer is out, two other actors have been promoted to regular status, as noted by Deadline. Chester P. Runk, played by Brandon McKnight, and Allegra Garcia, portrayed by Kayla Compton, will become permanent members of Team Flash in season 7.

Like many other shows that screeched to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Flash will likely need to adjust plans for the next season. What’s more, the unfinished story arc could need to be re-written due to changes in circumstances, such as the dismissal of Sawyer and the return of Danielle Panabaker, who was previously on maternity leave.

Still, the showrunner, Eric Wallace, has expressed optimism about the challenging situation. He told TV Line, “Amid the horror and the tragedy of what’s happening with this pandemic, if we can find some kind of lemonade in the lemon, it’s us having to rethink a few things about how a Flash season looks, given this ‘narrative unpredictability’ to the season.”

The Flash will return to The CW in 2021.
