Of the theatrical release of the film's many criticisms, one element of Justice League that was definitely disliked was the costume for the Flash. The Scarlet Speedster's iconic lithe, form-fitting red suit was reimagined as a bulky sort of plated armor, making him look like the Injustice Flash by way of Rob Liefeld. Rumors and mock-up suits suggested that the hero would be getting a second, more traditional costume, but this didn't come to pass in the movie that we got. Thankfully, The Flash solo movie finally seems to be picking up steam again, bolstered by renewed momentum in the DCEU following the announcement of the Snyder Cut's release.
Though a trailer for The Flash is still far off, newly released concept art shows how the titular hero will appear in the movie. The exact opposite of his costume in Justice League, this new costume is easily the Flash's best one yet.
Flash and Substance
The concept art shown for the character represents a new suit that he will wear in his long-awaited upcoming movie. The suit will apparently be created by Batman, who appears with him in the concept art. The suit is far more streamlined than the previous version, with the bulky and awkward armor plating gone completely. In its place is a lightweight jumpsuit that bears a far stronger resemblance to the hero's traditional look. It also has several lines and grooves throughout that fill with light that could potentially be Speed Force energy.
This look is likely in homage to the New 52 design for the character, which added numerous lightning-filled lines through the Flash's body. The suit has an almost rubbery texture to it, further making it feel like a comic book costume come to life. This suit will probably allow Barry to more easily control his speed without having to worry about the friction that caused him to use the bulky armored suit. The suit may also have some extra function related to the lightning being emitted by its wearer, though it's likely just a visual effect.
The Flash of Two Worlds
Though it's going to be given to him by some version of Batman, the Flash's new suit may also be inspired by the character's interaction with his TV series counterpart. The CW's landmark crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths not only crossed its heroes with other unrelated DC television properties of the past and present but also featured a small but pivotal appearance from Ezra Miller's version of the character. The two versions of Barry remark at how similar yet different they are compared to each other. The DCEU Flash had apparently not even taken a superhero name yet and was impressed with the name of the Arrowverse version. He also notes how much more breathable and comfortable his counterpart's costume appears to be.
It's this encounter that could not only lead to DCEU Barry taking the name of the Flash but also his traversing the multiverse. Michael Keaton's Batman will appear in the film, and it's possible that Barry will tell either him or the DCEU Batman about "the other me" to inspire one of them to create the suit. Regardless of which version of the Caped Crusader makes the suit, though, this is probably the best the Scarlet Speedster has ever looked outside of the comics.
Directed by Andy Muschietti with a script by Christina Hodson, The Flash stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen. It is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 3, 2022.
