If you've been struggling with utility bills in Hannibal, officials at the Hannibal Board of Public Works said come Tuesday, you'll be able to apply for help paying those bills thanks to $90,000 of CARES Act funds.
They said it's something both individuals and businesses can take advantage of.
"Our hope is to really fill a need that we've seen in our community," HBPW customer service coordinator Emily Dexheimer said. "We've seen more and more people become delinquent with their billing."
She said these funds are designed to help anyone but more specifically can help bridge the gap for people who haven't lost enough income to qualify for low-income assistance.
"This is for residential and commercial," Dexheimer said. "We saw a need in that start to come up as well as in Hannibal we have a lot of small businesses."
She said applications are being handled by Douglass Community Services.
Officials at Douglass Community Services said if those situations sound familiar, you should get in touch with them.
"Our residential customers will need to let us know if they have utilized any LIHEAP funds, they will also need to be able to tell us if they have been able to pay any of the bills themselves," Douglass Community Services CEO Stephanie Cooper said.
She said things are a little different for business owners, especially if they've made use of PPP funds.
"So you know how much of those funds have maybe been utilized for utilities in the past along with some other things that are specifically COVID related, such as how long have they been closed during COVID, were they able to re-open?," asked Cooper.
Dexheimer said the funds can cover bills between March 1 and December of this year.
"We'll be tracking that throughout the next months, seeing sort of where we're at, benchmarking how much is being used and making sure it is being used and utilized for our community," Dexheimer said.
Douglass Community Services officials said this is the first time DCS has worked to provide business relief, so they want any small business owner who has been struggling to give them a call and see what help is available.
Whether you're an individual or a business owner, the number to call is (573) 221-3892.
