How Flashpoint Became The Defining Flash Story In Just 10 Years - Screen Rant

Without a doubt, Geoff Johns' Flashpoint story has become the most character-defining and iconic Flash story in the DC Universe. It's already been adapted as an arc for The Flash TV series on the CW, and it's heavily rumored that the Warner Bros. Flash film starring Ezra Miller will be taking its cues from the same story as well. However, Flashpoint is less than 10 years old, having been published in 2011. With that in mind, why is it considered to be such pivotal Flash tale? Are there no other big character driven stories featuring the Flash that came before it?

In comparison, other equally large and defining character stories are much older than Flashpoint, like Death of Supermanwhere the Man of Steel sacrifices his life to defeat Doomsday, or Batman's Knightfall, where Bane breaks his back and the Dark Knight has to rehabilitate and retrain himself to get back into fighting form (to just name a couple). Both of those stories were written in the early 90's. In the Flash's case, he only had a few major defining story arcs like The Flash of Two Worlds from 1961, where Barry meets Jay Garrick, the Flash of Earth-2, which introduces the idea of the DC Multiverse at large. There's also A Flash of Lightning from 1985, which was a tie-in issue to Crisis on Infinite Earths and saw Barry Allen give his life, with Wally West taking over as the new Flash. However, any major story beyond that takes place after the 90s, like Barry's return in Flash: Rebirth, published in 2009. It seems as though there was a shortage of big dynamic Flash stories before the 2000s.

Flashpoint begins with Barry Allen waking up in a reality he doesn't recognize: he no longer has powers, but his parents are alive and well. However, Bruce Wayne was killed while his parents lived, Superman was held captive by the government for his entire life, Wonder Woman and Aquaman threaten to plunge the world into WWIII, and several more massive status quo changes have occurred. Seeing all of this, and wrongly believing Reverse-Flash to be the cause, Barry determines to get his powers back and set things right.

Although it took a couple tries getting struck by lightning, Barry gets his speed back with the help of Thomas Wayne, the Flashpoint reality's version of Batman. However, after rallying what heroes they can find, Barry comes face to face with Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, and Thawne reminds Barry of the truth: Barry is the one responsible for the changes to reality when he saved his mother from being murdered by Thawne in the past. It's all Barry's fault. After they fight, and Batman kills Thawne, Barry resolves to go back into the past and stop himself from saving his mother, letting reality take its natural course once more (as much as it can).

It's a truly epic story, but what makes it so special in the minds of fans? A big reason is probably that the story has everything to do with a deeply personal choice Barry Allen makes due to years of pain (preventing his mother's murder by Reverse-Flash in the past) which inadvertently leads to the very foundations of the entire DC Universe being shaken as a whole, even kickstarting both the New 52 and Rebirth events.

He chooses the needs and betterment of his friends' lives and those of countless innocents over saving the one that he personally wishes he could save more than anything, and that's a mark of a true hero. Flashpoint is an epic that touches every corner of the DC Multiverse due to all of reality being changed, but Flash is the focal point as his power and decisions serve as the catalyst, which is something that can't really be said for other character-defining stories in the DC Universe stable of heroes.
