How The Flash Season 7 Can Write Out Ralph Dibny | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

It would seem that Elongated Man is about to leave Central City, since The Flash’s plan to deal with its Hartley Sawyer problem is to recast and write out Ralph Dibny. The character has been an important part of the show since joining Team Flash in season 4, but everything changed when Sawyer was fired over racist and misogynistic tweets that had resurfaced.

Sawyer’s firing has led to much discussion over what to do with Elongated Man and how the series will move forward from here. Recently, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace opened up about how season 7 will handle the situation, saying a new actor will be found for the character. Thanks to Ralph’s shapeshifting ability, the show will be able to explain his new appearance. But even with a new actor portraying him, Ralph won’t be sticking around. He will appear in at least one episode early in season 7 to tie up loose ends with his character. After that, The Flash will take a step back from Ralph but will leave the door open for a return at some point in the future.

Specifics on how and why Ralph will exit the series have been kept under wraps, but there are ways of getting rid of him, despite his strong ties to Team Flash. The answer could be found in The Flash season 6 finale’s ending, which revealed that Sue Dearbon (Natalie Dreyfuss) was framed for the murder of Joseph Carver (Eric Nenninger) by Eva McCulloch (Efrat Dor). Obviously, the idea at the time was for the next few episodes to address how Ralph and Team Flash would help Sue clear her name. However, Sawyer’s firing may force the series to move in a different direction.

The Flash Ralph Sibny Sue Dearbon Identity Crisis

It could be explained at the beginning of The Flash season 7 that instead of having Sue stay in Central City – which is what was implied would happen in the season 6 finale – Ralph decided that the best thing to do would be to get her away from Central City, the Black Hole, and the police who are all looking for her. Rather than sending her away on her own, Ralph may leave with her to help protect her from her enemies. Team Flash’s plan could be for Ralph to stay with Sue, while the rest of them work on defeating Mirror Mistress and saving Iris (Candice Patton).

Once she’s defeated, the truth may come out about Carver’s murder and Sue will be free to come out of hiding; that could be when Ralph comes back onto the scene. With Sue no longer being labeled a wanted murderer, the series would have to come up with a new reason to keep him off the team. It’s possible that in his time away, Ralph ended up finding a new life for himself outside of Central City. Such a decision would effectively write out him out of the series indefinitely, but as long he’s still breathing, the character can still make guest appearances whenever Team Flash is in need of a helping hand. Interestingly, this is similar to how Arrow temporarily had Roy Harper exit the series, by having him leave the city to avoid being arrested. So there's precedent for this type of storyline in the Arrowverse for The Flash to use.
