The Flash Reveals Why Barry Allen's Kids Broke Bad | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #760, by Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.

As Barry Allen and Eobard Thawne raced against each other for one last confrontation to end their longstanding feud, the man known as the Reverse Flash was far from alone coming into the showdown. Traveling up and down the time stream, the high-speed villain recruited a host of the Flash's greatest enemies to form the Legion of Zoom and systematically dismantle every aspect of Barry's life, both as a superhero and as a lifelong resident of Central City. The most surprising additions to the evil ensemble were the Tornado Twins, approached by Thawne in the 31st century.

Twin siblings Don and Dawn Allen are the children of Barry and Iris, born in the far future after the couple was time-displaced in the months leading up to Crisis on Infinite Earths. With Barry and Iris both returning to the DC Universe's relative present after the Crisis, the twins grew up without their parents' guidance but still went on to become speedster superheroes in their own right, more commonly associated with the Legion of Super-Heroes. Before both siblings heroically sacrificed their lives to stop an attack by the Dominators, they would start their own respective families, with Don having a son that would grow up to become Impulse while Dawn would the mother of the Legionnaire XS.

The DC Rebirth incarnation of the Tornado Twins was decidedly more antagonistic, resenting Barry for not being a part of their lives. As Barry was ambushed by his own children, they revealed that the Reverse-Flash had been their mentor since Barry wasn't around to raise them, destroying Barry's childhood home in the process. When Impulse comes face-to-face with his long-lost father, the true reason behind the Tornado Twins' corruption is exposed: The corrosive influence of the Reverse Flash's Negative Speed Force.

The Flash: Rebirth revealed that when Eobard learned that Barry had inadvertently created the Speed Force after being struck by lightning, the aspiring villain replicated the same laboratory accident to create his own super-speed power source, with a twist: Eobard's Speed Force is a malevolent extra-dimensional energy. As a twisted inversion to the Speed Force, the Negative Speed Force makes the Reverse-Flash moniker literal and, while training under Thawne, the Tornado Twins had been exposed to the corruptive properties of the Negative Speed Force to become more villainous than their pre-Flashpoint counterparts.

The Tornado Twins' confrontation with Impulse is fortunately brief and largely non-violent as facing his own son brings Don Allen back to his senses with Dawn quickly following her brother's lead. As the two siblings gradually remember their past lives and become freed of the Negative Speed Force's influence, the Reverse-Flash abruptly sends both his former proteges back to their home time period in the far future rather than risk either of them switching sides to help the Flash Family.

The Tornado Twins have been decisively taken off the table before the final battle against the Legion of Zoom but not before both of Barry Allen's children had been saved from their surprise descent into villainy, hopefully setting up the two for a more heroic return in the future.
