During last weekend's DC FanDome event, the showrunner of The Flash television show, Eric Wallace, revealed how the series planned on handling the departure of actor Hartley Sawyer. Following the conclusion of Season 6 earlier this year, Sawyer was fired from the show after old racist and misogynistic tweets resurfaced online. With the actor now gone, the series had an Elongated Man problem given that, since the character's introduction, he had become a crucial member of Team Flash.
Now, Wallace has revealed that Ralph Dibny will make a brief return at the start of Season 7. A new actor will take on the role from Sawyer -- which will be explained by the superhero's ability to change his appearance -- and this, in turn, will allow the series to wrap up Ralph's storyline and write him off the show.
While this is all perfectly understandable, Ralph Dibny deserves to remain on The Flash -- even if he's played by another actor.
Ralph Dibny was first introduced in Season 4 of The Flash. Although he started out as a disinterested slob, he was given superpowers and rapidly groomed into Central City's newest protector. Over the course of nearly three full seasons, Ralph Dibny has become a crucial member of Team Flash, a dependable part of Barry's extended family and a favorite among fans.
Ralph has developed close relationships with plenty of characters on the show, from Caitlin and Cisco to Barry himself. He's become a pillar of The Flash, and part of the fabric of the show for the last three years. What's more, this last season saw Ralph get a story of his own, as he went about trying to find missing socialite Sue Dearbon. Sue eventually returned to Central City, and it was clear the series was building to a fun romantic relationship between the two characters, just like their comic book counterparts.
This all goes to show that seeing Ralph simply leave the show will completely alter Team Flash and the series itself going forward.
Sure, it's nice to know that the series will at least wrap up Ralph's storyline with another actor, but why stop there? As it stands, the Elongated Man's departure may leave a noticeable void. Killer Frost isn't always around to help, and that makes the Elongated Man the only dependable superhero who can lend Barry a helping hand. With him gone, help may not be so easy to come by anymore.
What's more, Ralph had become the source of some much-needed levity on the series, especially when other storylines leaned heavily on the drama. With him gone, his humor will leave along with him, and the show may be missing a certain spark.
And that is all without mentioning his burgeoning relationship with Sue Dearbon. In the comics, Ralph and Sue are an iconic pairing, and the series was slowly building up to that. But now, Ralph will leave, and yet Sue will remain on the team. Sue certainly isn't a character simply defined by her relationship with Ralph on the show by any means, but one might wonder what her purpose will be if this big part of comic book lore isn't in the cards anymore. We're sure she'll have her role to play in helping Team Flash, but it would still be nice to see this unfold as she moves closer to her comic book destiny.
For the time being, it looks like The Flash stands more to lose with Ralph Dibny gone. The series has already shown that it's willing to recast the role, so why bring another actor in for a simple one-off appearance? If they're good enough to replace Ralph, then perhaps they should stick around for the long haul.
Returning to The CW for Season 7 in 2021, The Flash stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Carlos Valdes, Danielle Panabaker, Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin and Danielle Nicolet.
