WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Flash #760, by Joshua Williamson, Christian Duce, Scott Kolins, Luis Guerrero, Hi-Fi and Steve Wands, on sale now.
As the Reverse-Flash has steadily built up his own supervillain team to form the Legion of Zoom and destroy Barry Allen's legacy once and for all, the heroic members of the Flash Family have rallied to back up the Scarlet Speedster and defend Central City from the forces of evil. And, as the final battle lines are set between the heroes and villains with the entire city caught in the crossfire, two fan-favorite speedsters get the chance to share a brief, happy reunion before standing alongside one another on the battlefield: Impulse and Max Mercury.
After Eobard Thawne had forcibly taken control of Barry's body, the Flash's consciousness had been shunted to the Speed Force, the extra-dimensional power source and pocket dimension for speedsters. As Barry acclimated to his surroundings, he had been reunited with Max Mercury and Jesse Quick, two superheroes that had been trapped inside the Speed Force since the events of Flashpoint. With Max as the Flash Family's resident Speed Force guru, the speedster helped Barry navigate through the pocket dimension to escape and reclaim his body, with Barry convincing Max and Jesse to escape with him and make their overdue return to the DC Universe inThe Flash #760.
As the Reverse-Flash is forced back into his own body and briefly withdraws to gather reinforcements for his Legion of Zoom, a surprised Bart Allen happily reunites with Max as he and Jesse emerge from the Speed Force. For the two superhero speedsters, the reunion is a poignant one that has been a long-time coming as the two had been closer than any of the other members of the Flash Family in the pre-Flashpoint era.
Max was a U.S. Cavalry officer from the 1830s who gained access to the Speed Force from a dying Native American shaman. Using his super-speed, Max traveled forward through time before eventually arriving in the relative present of the DCU and befriending Jay Garrick, the original Flash. When Eobard traveled in time to menace Wally West, Max would emerge from retirement to stop the Reverse-Flash and mentor Wally on the true nature of the Speed Force. When Barry's time-displaced grandson Bart arrived in the present, Max would take in the boy as the son he never had, training Bart to harness the full potential of the Speed Force while trying his best to keep him in line as his surrogate father figure. The two would be forcibly separated, once after Max was stranded in the Speed Force by the Golden Age speedster villain the Rival and after being plucked from the DCU by the reality-altering events of Flashpoint.
Bart is visibly overjoyed to be reunited with his old mentor, but Max quickly points out that their full reunion will have to be postponed so they can focus on the impending battle at hand. In the face of their greatest threat, the Flash Family has faced many happy reunions, from Jay Garrick to Max and Jesse.
And with Barry leading his family and friends into their final battle against Eobard Thawne and his own expansive army of minions, the happiest -- if most short-lived -- reunion of them all may have been between Impulse and Max Mercury, with the teacher and student running alongside each other for the first time in the DC Rebirth era.
