The changes to Barry Allen's suit in The Flash movie can carry over Zack Snyder's original plans from Justice League. In contrast to the title character's well-known powers of super-speed, development on The Flash has been far slower and more strained than many other DC movies. However, that developmental difficulty has practically done a complete 180 within the last few months.
Progress on The Flash has accelerated massively since director Andy Muschietti came aboard, and the project is poised to become one of the most pivotal upcoming DC films. Acting as a big-screen interpretation of the DC Comics Flashpoint story, not only is Ben Affleck set to return in the movie as the DCEU's Batman, but Michael Keaton will also appear as his version of The Dark Knight by way of the film's significant multiverse elements. Meanwhile, Barry's superhero attire will also see its own update, but one that is curiously in-line with what Snyder originally planned for the DCEU as a franchise.
DC FanDome's The Flash panel featured concept art showing what Barry Allen's suit will look like in the 2022 movie, and also revealed that it will be explained in the film as having been designed by Bruce Wayne. The artwork has noticeable differences from Barry's Justice League suit; Snyder himself eschewed incorporating a second Wayne Tech Flash suit into his movie in order for The Flash's director to be free to use one. With Barry's suit now being presented as the work of Bruce Wayne in The Flash, audiences will have the chance to get the best of both worlds.
This won't even be the first time the DCEU has offered a redesigned costume for a Justice League character, either. Arthur Curry a.k.a. Aquaman dons an Atlantean battle armor suit with a green and gold design when joining forces with his fellow heroes, while his suit in James Wan's Aquaman is a comics-accurate recreation of his classic orange and green suit. While The Flash will work in a similar costume update for Barry Allen, the approach it will take will incorporate what Snyder had initially considered for Barry at the conclusion of Justice League.
This could also offer some indication as to the nature of Ben Affleck's role in the movie. While the Flashpoint basis of the story is well-known, the film will nevertheless offer its own spin on it. The Scarlet Speedster's suit coming from Bruce Wayne's design points to Barry's strong admiration for him, and signals the two continuing to be close allies. The fact that Bruce has gone as far as to bestow Barry with a brand new suit also signals that it will have a lot of significance to the plot, as well.
The road to Barry Allen's solo movie being brought to life has been a long and hard one, not unlike his other upcoming adventure: the Justice League Snyder Cut. Nevertheless, many of the hurdles that had slowed development on Barry's film also seem to have been overcome. In the end, The Flash is clearly set to chart its own path; yet, when it comes to the suit Barry will don, Muschietti has found a way to put his own spin on the character while also honoring Snyder's original vision for the franchise.
