The Flash Was Originally A Full-Blown Shapeshifter | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Everyone knows The Flash for his super-speed; in fact, he just might be the most recognizable speedster in the history of comic books. However, in some of his older issues, Flash could do more than just run fast - he was also a full-on shapeshifter.

The Flash’s super-speed works a little differently than, say, Superman’s or Quicksilver's. While those two are innately fast thanks to their biology, The Flash and other speedsters of the DC universe get their powers from something called the Speed Force, a cosmic energy field that literally pushes space and time forward. In addition to moving at incredibly high speeds, the Speed Force also gives the Flash the ability to think faster than a supercomputer, travel through time, manipulate sound waves, and control the molecules of his body, which, in turn, allows him to phase through objects and, yes, shape-shift.

The first instance of Flash shapeshifting was in The Flash #126, where Flash is turned to glass by Mirror Master. Quite a pickle, but fortunately, Flash has an easy solution. “In a mirror state, vibrations would shatter me!” he thinks, “But super-speed gives me control over every atom in my body! and I can cause those atoms to speed up, creating heat to melt down my glassy figure.” The Scarlet Speedster does just that, then reforms his molecules from the melted glass back into his normal self. The Flash uses a similar move in issue #206, where he is disintegrated by aliens, and in #288, where Doctor Alchemy turns him into a cloud of water vapor. In both cases, Flash manages to re-unify his molecules and return to his original, solid state.

The Flash Changing Phase Shapeshifter

It’s true that in all those instances, Flash was transformed by someone else, but rest assured, he is more than capable of shape-shifting on his own. In The Flash #245, Barry learns he has complete control over his molecules, so not only can he phase through objects by matching their frequencies, but he can also change his own molecular structure. Barry proceeds to show off his new ability by turning into a meteor-like mass to strike down a criminal. When another fires a laser at him, he turns into an O-shaped ring, causing the blast to go right through him, then changes back into himself to finish the job.

Unfortunately, Flash doesn’t do much shapeshifting these days, mainly sticking to super-speed and Speed Force time travel. Still, it would be cool to see modern iterations of the character take this ability to the level of someone like Clayface or Mystique. After all, anything is possible with a little Speed Force.
