The Flash is the fastest hero in DC Comics, and though he has an incredibly quick healing factor, his original method of healing was very peculiar.
While his origin story gave him superspeed, The Flash has plenty of powers as a result of the power boost. Barry can incorporate his superspeed into his thinking, giving him the ability to basically predict future Flash outcomes in any particular situation. However, one of his more useful abilities is his ability to heal from injuries quickly. While Barry's healing factor naturally occurs as a result of his speed abilities, his original healing method was a whole lot sillier.
Barry was able to save Central City from an approaching tornado in Flash #190, but still suffered a broken leg as a result. After having his leg placed in a cast, the attending doctor told Flash that he would never be able to run again, thus ending his superheroic career. Though Barry was initially ready to call it quits, having been confined to a wheelchair, his wife Iris convinced him otherwise. Motivated by Iris sewing his Flash uniform, Barry was inspired to try something daring--a last ditch effort to reclaim his heroic career from ruin. Equipping his suit with cutting-edge gadgetry, Barry was able to bring his uniform to life and control it using voice commands. Turning invisible using his vibration powers, Barry was even able to follow behind and watch his experiment in action. However, this would prove to be the key in reviving the Flash's career completely.
The following day, Flash had a follow up with his doctor, who informed him that he could potentially make a complete recovery. As it turned out, Barry's near constant vibration (used to stay invisible) actually healed his leg, and Barry considered it a form of "vibrational therapy." Sure enough, The Flash was up and running in his next adventure, showing that he had made a complete recovery as predicted. Admittedly, it's unclear how Flash exactly managed to heal himself through vibration alone. Flash's vibration at this point in time was mainly used to either traverse between earths (such as travelling to Earth 2 or Earth Prime) or to travel through solid objects. Before this point, Flash's vibration showed no signs of having any healing properties, and would seemingly never be used in this manner again afterwards.
Though this would be far from the last time The Flash would break his leg, over time Flash's healing would become integrated into his normal power set, rather then an extension of another ability. While Flash made a fast recovery, this story did show that Barry, given the means, will continue to be a hero despite all odds against him. Barry had no chance of running ever again, but quickly came up with a scientific solution to his dilemma. Without a doubt, Barry Allen is a hero at heart, and thankfully he was able to make a recovery and continue to fight criminals as the Scarlet Speedster once more. That said, The Flash's first means of recovery was certainly anything but conventional, and only raises more questions then answers.
