The Flash: Trailer, Plot, Release Date & News to Know | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

In 2014, Warner Bros. announced an ambitious film slate for the DC Extended Universe featuring some of publisher's most well-known and beloved heroes, including Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash. However, the critical and commercial failure of 2017's Justice League resulted in some pretty major restructuring for the DCEU. As a result, Barry Allen/The Flash has not yet gotten his own solo adventure.

While The Flash seems to be on track right now, the project is still in the early stages of production. Here's everything we know right now about the upcoming film.

THE STORY SO FAR

While actor Ezra Miller's Flash had cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, both of which released in 2016, Justice League was the Scarlet Speedster's first major appearance in the DCEU. In Justice League, the hero worked alongside Bruce Wayne/Batman, Vic Stone/Cyborg, Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Diana Prince/Wonder Woman to resurrect Clark Kent/Superman so as to defeat Steppenwolf -- a minion of the New God Darkseid. The DCEU's Flash most recently appeared during the CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover, where he briefly interacted with his Arrowverse counterpart.

The actual plot of The Flash film has been in flux for quite some time. However, Warner Bros. revealed the movie's title and logo as Flashpoint at 2017's Comic-Con International in San Diego and that seems to be the general direction the DCEU movie is headed, albeit with some potential differences.

Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Andy Kubert, Flashpoint comes about as a result of Barry travelling back in time to save his mother from dying at the hands of Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash. When Barry wakes up in the Flashpoint reality, his mother is alive, his father is dead and he himself has no powers. In this alternate world, Barry was never the Flash. However, with a war between Aquaman's Atlantis and Wonder Woman's Themyscira threatening to destroy the planet, Barry teams up with Thomas Wayne -- who became Batman when his reality's Bruce was murdered -- and Cyborg to stop the threat.

TRAILER

Ezra Miller as The Flash on Crisis on Infinite Earths

There is no official trailer for The Flash at this time.

CAST AND CREW

Despite rumors and reports to the contrary, Miller is expected to reprise his role as Flash. Most recently, Miller's staying was in doubt after an incident in Reykjavik, Iceland, in which the actor appeared to grab a woman by the throat and slam her to the ground. However, Reykjavik Metropolitan Police did not make any arrests as a result of the incident.

Aside from Miller, there aren't many certainties surrounding The Flash's casting. Kiersey Clemons was initially cast as Iris West, Barry Allen's love interest, and filmed scenes for Justice League. However, her part in the movie was cut. Since then, Clemons' future in the DCEU has been in doubt, with a casting call in May sparking rumors she may have departed the role. Additionally, while Ray Fisher was once slated to reprise his role as Cyborg in The Flash, there's no official word on if that's still the case.

Earlier this year, Michael Keaton was in talks to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, reprising his role from 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns. The role would have Keaton serve the DCEU in much the same capacity as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, mentoring younger heroes and tying the universe together.

The Flash has had a number of different creative teams attached to it over the years, with a number of notable directors and writers departing the project. Currently, It and It: Chapter 2 director Andy Muschietti is slated to direct the film with a script from Bumblebee and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson.
