The Flash Finds the Ultimate Super-Speed Challenge | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "The Speedster Games" from the DC Cybernetic Summer Special, by Joshua Williamson, David Lafuente, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands, on sale now.

The heroes of the DC multiverse have often come together to deal with various conflicts in recent years. However, not every crossover has to be a threat. Various versions of the Flash just came together for a friendly competition.

DC has introduced a racing tournament that challenges each and every Flash in the multiverse in a unique series of obstacles, all in pursuit of the Lightning Cup.

Flash Race Day

Flash Race Day is established as an annual challenge for every speedster in the multiverse and a place where they can all come together and genuinely test their super-speed skills against the only opponents who can keep up with them -- namely, other versions of the Flash. The winner each year receives the Lightning Cup, a special and signature trophy depicting a large lightning bolt.  The competition is held on Earth-0 (aka the core DC Universe), where the top contestant is Barry Allen.

A number of different versions of the Flash can be seen within the stands: Impulse of Earth-0, the Flash of Earth-2 (Jay Garrick, who was featured heavily in the New 52 Earth-2 series), the Flash of Earth-6 (Mary Maxwell, who developed her powers after being injected with hummingbird DNA on a world inspired by the characters of Stan Lee's Just Imagine), the Flash of Earth-9 (Lia Nelson, who's body is constructed of pure light, from the universe inspired by Tangent Comics), the Flash of Earth-30 (the Soviet-controlled world of Superman: Red Son), Formula-1 of Earth-34 (the seldom-seen speedster of a world inspired by Astro City) and Accelerator from Earth-39 (home to the United Nation's sponsored technological superteam, the Agents of W.O.N.D.E.R. and based on Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents).

The race is revealed to be far more challenging than the "average flat race" that Flash typically has with Superman, suggesting the Flashes of the multiverse also all humor their respective Superman-analogues enough to "race" them in their respective worlds.

Flash Race Day includes obstacles that challenge the Flash's ability to move and react at top speeds, such as running across the Blades of Doom and through the Library of the Lost. There are also specific power-based challenges, such as the Torpedo Burpees (where the speedsters have to make themselves fly by creating mini-tornadoes underneath them) and the Wall (where the speedsters have to vibrate their molecules through a solid wall without losing speed).

The bulk of the story focuses on the race between the perennial Flash-favorite, Barry Allen of Earth-0, and the robotic Mercury Flash from Earth-44. Mercury Flash feels that, as the sole robotic Flash present, the other speedsters don't see him as equal. So, he dedicates himself to beating Barry Allen in a race to prove his mettle as a speedster.

Barry is quick to tell Mercury that anyone who uses their super-speed to try and help people is a Flash, regardless of whether they are humans or robots. Mercury Flash proves this point himself not long after, when he gives up a chance to trip up Barry and claim victory. Instead, the race ends with a tie -- which prompts cheers from fellow versions of Flash, helping Mercury Flash finally feel accepted by the group.

The Flashes have always been established as the DC heroes most comfortable hopping between realities, often coming up against other versions of themselves from across the multiverse or working together to save lives. It makes perfect sense they'd want to challenge themselves with this sort of task. It could even be connected to the House of Heroes and Justice Incarnate, the multiversal Justice League introduced in The Multiversity.
