Is The Flash about to lose a major cast member? - digitalspy.com

With that big Iris twist and a potential Justice League on the horizon, plenty has changed in The Flash's world post-Crisis, but showrunner Eric Wallace reckons, "The real fallout of 'Crisis' has yet to be seen."

What that might be is yet to be determined, but given how long The Flash has been running (literally), it's possible one of the original cast members may soon leave the show.

No one has officially said they're leaving, but rumours have circulated for some time around Carlos Valdes' role on the show in particular. Cisco Ramon is a founding member of Team Flash, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating that he might soon leave the show for good.

Following the crossover, recent episodes of The Flash fuelled the rumour mill more than ever by briefly pulling Cisco out of the show entirely. Instead of fighting metas in Central City, the man formerly known as Vibe took it upon himself to explore the new reality of Earth-Prime.

To be fair, that makes a lot of sense. Who better than Cisco to catalog these changes while naming each new villain he encounters?

The problem is that this extended leave of absence also raised a few alarm bells. Fortunately, showrunner Eric Wallace was quick to deny that Valdes is gone for good, reassuring TV Line that this change is only temporary:

"No, [Cisco and Carlos] are not going anywhere. Cisco's off on his journey to catalog the world, but he'll be back very quickly." And when he does return, Wallace promises that Cisco will shed light on "one of the biggest things Team Flash has ever dealt with".

With that in mind, it seems Valdes' continuing involvement with the show is all but guaranteed.

However, this isn't the first time that there's been talk of Cisco leaving. Towards the end of season five, Valdes addressed rumours of his supposed departure head-on, explaining that there was no truth in them whatsoever:

"I know [about the rumours]. Here's the thing – this should be a cautionary tale. When 'publication x' says, 'sources tell us... bla-di-bla-di-bla', they have no sources! The telltale signs are there, the red flags are there, but people buy that shit anyway. They'll buy that shit till the cows come home!"

He continued: "I can't tell you how many people have come up to me, have written to me, have yelled at me, have cried at me, about me leaving the show. I'm like, 'I'm learning shit about myself that I didn't know – this is crazy!' So, for me, it's a cautionary tale: Don't believe the rumours. I'm here. Season 6, I'm here."

Still, if Valdes changes his mind later down the line and does decide to leave, this could easily work within the context of the story. Now that the multiverse is all but gone and Cisco has given up his powers, his character is no longer as vital as he once was.

A new Wells seems to join STAR LABS every other week and with the rest of the team on hand too, the loveable scientist could easily leave without messing up the dynamic that the show's set in place.

Heck, there's even another wise-cracking science geek who's ready and willing to take his place should the need arise. Chester P Runk hasn't appeared much since the beginning of season six, but it wouldn't take much to integrate him more in the future... assuming of course that the show even has a future.

The CW recently renewed The Flash for a seventh season, but there's no guarantee that Barry will keep running beyond that point. After all, Arrow just ended after eight seasons, and that was the Arrowverse's flagship program.

So what's in store for the second-longest-running superhero show on The CW?

The Flash season 6 - Grant Gustin as Barry Allen and Candice Patton as Iris West

The CW

Speaking to Grant Gustin at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Digital Spy asked what the future might hold for Barry and his friends in light of Arrow ending:

"I mean, we're all contracted right now [for] seven seasons – this is the sixth, so it's definitely in the back of my mind that next year, even, could be potentially the last season. Who knows?

"We've all been saying that here today, trying to really take in Comic-Con while we're here, for the sixth time. It can be overwhelming – especially for me, personally, I get a little anxious about it.

"But I'm taking that little bit more time to really take it in, because our show could also end in the near future."

While Gustin can't travel through time like his character can, there's a chance the Flash star may be onto something here. And if he's right, then it won't just be Cisco who could end up leaving either.

Whatever happens, we expect the original Team Flash to stay on board for however long the show runs. After all, STAR LABS just wouldn't be the same without Cisco, Caitlin, Iris, and Joe, as well as Barry himself. And honestly? We can't handle another crisis so soon after Arrow just took its final bow.

The Flash airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW in the US. Sky One and NOW TV air the show in the UK.
