Geoff Johns Told 'The Flash' Star Candice Patton That Iris Wouldn't Get Powers - Heroic Hollywood

Geoff Johns originally told Candice Patton that Iris wouldn’t be getting powers in The Flash.

Candice Patton stars as Iris West, one of the key players in Geoff Johns’ The Flash. Candice Patton’s Iris West has grown a whole lot throughout The Flash’s tenure on The CW. Candice Patton’s Iris West first began as a reporter who eventually became one of the crucial central members for STAR labs. Despite being one of the more controversial characters on Geoff Johns’ executive produced The Flash, fans have warmed up to Candice Patton’s Iris West, who would also end up becoming The Flash’s wife!

One of the most iconic moments for Candice Patton’s character was when she was given the Speed Force and had no choice but to fill in for Barry Allen, a.k.a The Flash. Despite being a pivotal turning point for her character on The Flash, Candice Patton has no idea that the scene-stealing moment was coming. Speaking to TV Guide, Candice Patton revealed that Geoff Johns originally told her that there was no way Iris West was getting powers in Geoff Johns’ executive produced The Flash.

“[I was] a little shocked because I remember very early on in the show, I’d asked [executive producer and The Flash comic book writer] Geoff Johns, ‘Do you think I’ll ever suit up?’ and he was like, ‘No, you’ll never suit up.'”

Of course, that turned out to be a lie, as Candice Patton’s Iris West was given Speed Force powers to save the day in The Flash‘s season 4 episode Run, Iris, Run. With respect to her getting powers, Candice Patton expressed how delighted she was to be doing something different.

“When they decided to do it in Season 4, I was shocked but also really excited just to kind of do something different, be more physical, be more active, be more of the hero on the show.”

Giving Candice Patton’s Iris West in The Flash superpowers was a major turning point for the character. Iris West would go on the be one of the key players in STAR labs, and was no longer sidelined as a sidekick for Barry Allen. We’re not sure what caused Geoff Johns to change his mind, but fans must be delighted that The Flash writer decided to flesh out Iris West’s role.
