The Flash: This Is Why [Spoiler] Was ALWAYS Going to Die | CBR - CBR - Comic Book Resources

The first new antagonist longtime Flash writer Joshua Williamson introduced to his acclaimed run was Godspeed, an antihero speedster who openly employed lethal force on criminals putting him at odds with Barry Allen despite their previous friendship and working relationship on the Central City Police Department. The character quickly became a fan-favorite, and was soon brought to life in live-action on The CW's Flash television series.

As Williamson's run races towards its finale, the Reverse-Flash has shockingly betrayed Barry and Godspeed by snapping the former's neck after helping them defeat the cosmic villain Paradox. Incensed, Barry has sworn to stop Eobard Thawne once and for all, leading to a final showdown. But while it came as a shock to Barry and the readers, according to Williamson, Godspeed's death was inevitable.

"From the very beginning... there's a scene in issue #7 where [Godspeed] tells Barry, 'I'm going to help you' -- because, at that time, Eobard was still locked up in Iron Heights -- he says, 'I'm going to go to Iron Heights and I'm going to kill Eobard for you and make your life easier by doing the thing you could never do,'" Williamson explained in an upcoming interview with CBR. "And Barry stops Godspeed, but there's always been this tease of Eobard versus Godspeed. That was always going to happen, that was always the plan -- he was built with that in mind. We knew we would always get to that point, and it was originally going to happen much earlier, but it just didn't work out."

Reverse-Flash Godspeed

While Godspeed's death was pushed back to the final act of his run, Williamson says it worked out for the best as the event dovetailed perfectly from the fallout of Barry being forced to turn to the Reverse-Flash for help against Paradox and kickstart the last two story arcs. But even with the delay in Godspeed's death, Williamson began consciously building to Thawne's betrayal as early as The Flash Annual #1 in 2018.

"The way stories happened and got broken up and pieces got moved around, we just pushed it back much later and then it was like 'Oh, this actually works perfect right here.' There was always this understanding that...you go back and look at the first annual that we did -- which was at the beginning of 2018 introducing Wally back into the book -- in the annual, Commander Cold says 'There's someone locked up in Iron Heights that was the only person Eobard could put away,'" Williamson recalled. "That's the start of this huge story that's going to unravel post-'Flash War,' it was always this big thing that was going to happen. So it was always engineered that Eobard defeated Paradox, Paradox would come back, Barry would need to get Eobard to do that and, eventually, Eobard would help him stop Paradox but betray Barry in a really impactful way and that's what killing Godspeed was. And that kicks off us moving forward."

Written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Rafa Sandoval, Scott Kolins, Jordi Tarragona and Arif Prianto, The Flash #759 is on sale now from DC Comics.
