The Flash: Speed Metal Will Wrap Up Wally West's Rebirth Story - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Over the past several years, one of the most prominent characters in the DC Multiverse has been Wally West, the Flash displaced from reality by Doctor Manhattan only to resurface and kickstart the DC Rebirth. However, reacclimatizing to the reimagined DC Universe for the speedster superhero proved difficult, with his children missing and his wife Linda Park unable to recognize him due to Manhattan's meddling. This culminated with Wally having a falling out with his mentor and best friend Barry Allen before accidentally killing patients at the superhero rehabilitation facility of Sanctuary during the crossover event Heroes in Crisis.

Wally has played a pivotal role in the current crossover Dark Nights: Death Metal, having gained Manhattan's omnipotent powers during the miniseries Flash Forward. Longtime Flash writer Joshua Williamson will have Wally play a central role in the upcoming tie-in one-shot special issue Dark Nights: Death Metal - Speed Metal #1, hinting that the story will address Wally's controversial character arc and offer the possibility of redemption in addition to being an important tie-in to the overarching event.

"The Wally story continues into Death Metal because he's still a big part of Death Metal but, I think when it came to a lot of the emotional stuff and what's been going on with him, I wanted to be sure to wrap that stuff up and have something to say about his piece in the DC Universe the last four years," Williamson observed in an interview with CBR.

Williamson's run on The Flash comes to a close on Sept. 22 with issue #762 closing out the current "Finish Line" story arc, the same day Speed Metal is also released. For Williamson, he wanted to integrate Wally back into the Flash Family through "Family Line" and Speed Metal while giving the Scarlet Speedster he had grown up with the chance to "make right" the things that had happened to him since the start of Rebirth.

"I like writing Barry but I definitely feel like I'm done writing him, 'Finish Line' is the end of me writing Barry and I definitely wanted to get to work with Wally one more time and sort of tell this story with him and definitely make right some of the stuff with him," Williamson teased. "If you've been a fan of the Flash, for as long as you and I have, and known this character and grew up with Wally, I think, reading 'Finish Line,' you're going to see these pieces come together. And then, reading Speed Metal, it's just going to wrap it all up and put a nice bow on top. In a lot of ways, it's a love letter to the Flash Family from me, wrapping up my time with these characters and me just saying 'This is what I can do now. There's more to come but, I needed to make sure I touched on these things.'"

Written by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Eddy Barrows, Dark Nights: Death Metal - Speed Metal #1 goes on sale Sept. 22 from DC Comics.
