The Flash: GODSPEED Was Always Planned To Be Killed | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

The anti-hero Godspeed has proven to be a welcome and refreshing addition to The Flash's already extensive cast of speedsters. However, according to his creator, The Flash writer Josh Williamson, Godspeed's demise had been foreseen very early into the process.

Godspeed first appeared in a cameo in The Flash: Rebirth #1 before making his full debut in The Flash #3. A member of the Central City Police Department, August Heart was a co-worker of Barry Allen's who was struck by speed force lightning while investigating the murder of his brother. For a time, August worked as Barry Allen's partner while he adjusted to his new speed force powers. However, as citizens across Central City were getting speed force powers, a mysterious figure named Godspeed emerged killing any criminals who abused their new powers, taking their speed in the process. Revealed to be August Heart, Godspeed was a vigilante who only targeted criminals like the one who killed his brother. However, he did accidentally kill several civilians in an effort to drain their speed.

Godspeed had gained so much speed he could literally be two places at once, making him a dangerous rival for the Flash.  Despite this, Godspeed didn't seem himself necessarily as the Flash's enemy, and even set out to eliminate the super-villains set out in Iron Heights, where Godspeed would ironically end up after being stopped by the Flash and Kid Flash. Godspeed would work alongside the likes of not only the Flash, but also Eobard Thawne, to stop Paradox from erasing the Flash from history. When asked by August if he knew who killed his brother, Thawne replied that it was in fact him who had killed his brother - before easily breaking Godspeed's neck, killing him.

According to Williamson, Godspeed's death was not only inevitable but also intended somewhat earlier. After recapping Godspeed's intention to break into Iron Heights, Josh Williamson told CBR, "And Barry stops Godspeed, but there's always been this tease of Eobard versus Godspeed. That was always going to happen, that was always the plan -- he was built with that in mind. We knew we would always get to that point, and it was originally going to happen much earlier, but it just didn't work out."

Williamson also said Godspeed's death was a necessary ingredient in dramatically raising the stakes of Barry Allen and Eobard Thawne's latest conflict. As Williamson told CBR, "That's the start of this huge story that's going to unravel post-'Flash War,' it was always this big thing that was going to happen. So it was always engineered that Eobard defeated Paradox, Paradox would come back, Barry would need to get Eobard to do that and, eventually, Eobard would help him stop Paradox but betray Barry in a really impactful way and that's what killing Godspeed was. And that kicks off us moving forward."

Godspeed's death pushed The Flash into not only the final endgame between the Flash and the Reverse-Flash, but also kicked off Williamson's final arc on the book itself. With his own run of The Flash speeding towards a devastating conclusion, Williamson has pulled out all the stops with Godspeed's death. Still, like any fan-favorite character with a connection to the Speed Force, one has to wonder if Godspeed will race through the revolving door of comic book resurrection sooner rather than later.
