Every Other Batman Actor Who Can Appear In The Flash Movie - Screen Rant

Reports have confirmed that the introduction of the multiverse in The Flash will involve multiple versions of each DC hero, opening the door for several past Batman actors to appear. As if the news Michael Keaton would be returning as Batman in the upcoming Flash movie wasn't exciting enough, it's now been confirmed that Ben Affleck will also don the iconic cowl once again for the 2022 outing. The Flash is said to be adapting the Flashpoint storyline from the comics, which sees the scarlet speedster attempt to travel back in time, ending up in an alternate reality. Now, it's been confirmed Ezra Miller's Flash will travel to "various parallel dimensions" in the movie, making it possible for numerous different versions of DC heroes from alternate realities to appear.

Director Andy Muschietti has also confirmed the multiverse means that "all the cinematic iterations that we’ve seen before are valid,” meaning every DC movie past, present, and even future will exist in their own reality, but technically be part of the same unified multiverse. Each reality will have the potential to cross over with one another as part of The Flash's dimension-travelling plot. Such a move also allows DC to keep making standalone stories based on DC characters while leaving the option open to cross those stories over with one another. The Flash will unite the entire DC movie multiverse for the first time, opening the door to all manner of cross-over in the future.

It's a smart move on the part of DC and Warner, who have struggled to mimic the success of Marvel's singular shared universe: the MCU. It also means that having both Affleck and Keaton play Batman can be easily explained as a result of Barry Allen travelling between alternate realities. But with every DC movie ever made now being part of the multiverse, as well as the potential for previously unseen realities cropping up in The Flash, there's the possibility that audiences will see more than two Batman actors appearing in the movie. Here's every Batman actor that could appear in The Flash.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Since Jeffrey Dean Morgan's brief appearance as Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas Wayne, in Batman V Superman, there's been talk of the actor returning in the role of Flashpoint Batman. In the original comic book Flashpoint storyline, once arriving in the alternate reality, Barry Allen seeks the help of Batman, only to discover that in this timeline Thomas Wayne became Batman after Bruce was killed in the infamous alleyway mugging. This Batman is an altogether more brutal vigilante, and fans have been keen to see an on-screen version since even before Morgan appeared in Batman V Superman.

Since the The Flash movie was first announced it's been reported that the movie was an adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline. As a result, there's been speculation that the Flash movie could bring an actual Flashpoint Batman into the DCEU. When it was announced Michael Keaton would be appearing in the movie, it was initially thought he could appear as a version of the Flashpoint Batman. But he has since been confirmed as playing the same Dark Knight that appeared in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns. With The Flash said to be a loose adaptation of the Flashpoint storyline, it could be that Muschietti and WB are relying on Keaton to act as a kind of quasi-Flashpoint Batman – i.e. the Batman of the movie's alternate reality — but not Thomas Wayne's grizzled vigilante.

Now, with the confirmation that Miller's Flash will be visiting "various parallel dimensions," the filmmakers are clearly not shackled to one alternate reality. That means that while Keaton will seemingly be the main alternate Batman in The Flash, the movie can also introduce an actual Thomas Wayne Flashpoint Batman. And who better to play him but Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who has expressed ongoing interest in the role and would fit well into a movie that also includes Affleck's Batman.

Christian Bale

The return of Christian Bale to the role of Batman in The Flash seems unlikely. But with every DC movie now included in the multiverse, there's more of a chance than ever. If WB and DC are looking to make The Flash into a real party, much like the Arrowverse's Crisis On Infinite Earths event, they'd definitely do well to tempt Bale back, even for a brief cameo. The British actor's run of Batman movies are some of the most acclaimed superhero movies of all time, with director Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy setting a high bar for the genre in recent years. Seeing the Dark Knight himself showing up in The Flash would not only go a long way to demonstrating the all-encompassing nature of the multiverse, it would surely be a fan-favorite moment.

Again, this seems one of the more unlikely cameos The Flash will deliver. Christopher Nolan's celebrated trilogy is a uniquely grounded take on Batman, with Nolan going to great lengths to depict how the vigilante could exist in a realistic world. And while it's clear the multiverse includes every DC movie yet made, Warner might be reticent to potentially undermine the director and his team's painstaking efforts to create a realistic depiction of Batman by retroactively throwing in dimension-travelling superheroes. At least with Keaton, Batman Returns – with its horror-inspired aesthetics – introduced some seemingly supernatural elements with Michele Pfieffer's Selina Kyle being resurrected by stray cats and Danny Devito's Penguin being a literal freak of nature. As such, Keaton's Batman universe could meld better with the likely fantastical tone of a Flashpoint adaptation. Confronting Bale's Batman, who struggled to overcome Bane – a simple version of the character who was essentially just a strong man  – with a multiverse of alternate realities just seems like too ambitious a plan at this early stage.

Val Kilmer

Val Kilmer Batman Forever

Though it was previously reported that The Flash will retcon Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, it seems that's not entirely the case. At this point, things remain somewhat mysterious, but with Muschietti's confirmation that the multiverse contains "all that you’ve seen" and "everything that you will see," the possibility for Val Kilmer's take on the Dark Knight to make a reappearance is now very much back on the table (WB and DC will probably leave Clooney's version alone for the time being). Val Kilmer himself will be appearing at DC FanDome on August 22nd, prompting rumors of a Batman Forever Schumacher cut, similar to the Justice League Snyder Cut. But perhaps the actor will be in attendance for another reason entirely – to promote his return to DC with an appearance as Batman in The Flash.

Kilmer appearing in The Batman is a long shot, but certainly possible given Muschietti's quote. The DC multiverse is set to include "everything," which leaves no incarnation of Batman, or any other hero, off the table for a potential cameo appearance in the Flash movie. Of course, the Flashpoint storyline on which the film is based saw Barry Allen travel to one particular alternate timeline, but it's already been reported that the movie verson will differ from the comic book plot. If DC really wants to establish the all-encompassing nature of the multiverse, as well as throw in yet another surefire crowd-pleaser, it would do well to include Kilmer's Batman in some form, even in a brief cameo.

Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson as Batman

Before The Flash arrives in 2022, 2021 will see Robert Pattinson take on the role of the Dark Knight. Naturally there's been some talk already of what Affleck's return means for Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves' The Batman. As it stands, Pattinson will be the prime Batman for the DCEU going forward, and the movie will likely be a completely standalone affair that doesn't need to fit into any wider continuity. Keeping The Batman separate makes sense for Pattinson's first outing in the role, allowing the movie to establish its own universe without being beholden to a grander continuity. Reeves' noir-inspired take on the caped crusader is also said to focus more on Batman's detective skills and appears to be a much more grounded affair than the time/reality-travelling narrative of The Flash.

With that said, Muschietti was very clear that the multiverse includes "everything," meaning that just because Warner likely won't cross The Batman with The Flash in 2022, that doesn't mean the studio can't. It wouldn't be all that far-fetched to imagine at least an easter egg in The Flash hinting at a possible future cross-over with Pattinson's Batman – if only so that Warner can reassure audiences they haven't forgotten about Pattinson. If the studio is keen to play up that point as much as possible, fans may even see a brief cameo.
