While it’s taken some time to get The Flash off the ground, it’s finally on its way and we already have a good idea of what it’ll look like when it arrives in 2022. With both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton boarding the movie as their respective Batmen, the film starring Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster has quickly become one of the most fascinating DC projects. We recently discovered the surprising news that the Reverse-Flash won’t be the main villain of the movie. This comes as a huge shock since the film is adapting portions of Flashpoint, a story where the villain is a prime piece. So with that in mind, who else could show up to cause trouble for Barry Allen and the two Bruce Wayne’s? Take a look at our latest video below.
Gorilla Grodd
The Flash has a healthy history of colorful villains that he’s fought over the years, and not all of them are just evil speedsters. Take Gorilla Grodd for example. The hulking Gorilla became hyper-intelligent when an alien ship crashed in his home. The alien piloting the ship helped Grodd build Gorilla City. Sure, it’s not an inventive name, but it’s a cool idea. Anyway, the villain’s gone up against The Flash numerous times, as he attempts to assert domination for his people. But cast your minds back to 2017, a small throwaway line was included in Justice League which hinted at Grodd’s appearance in the DCEU. Barry mentions that he can speak “gorilla sign-language”. Obviously that doesn’t mean Ezra Miller’s The Flash has already crossed paths with Grodd, but it would be a nice way of following up on Justice League without diving into the divisive film too heavily.
The Rogues
Doubling down on villains isn’t always a good idea, (hello
Spider-Man 3), but
The Flash could use the Central City Rogues to set up multiple threats to follow up in later films. Although yes, they don’t like to be called ‘supervillains’, choosing to go by ‘The Rogues’ instead. Introducing a smaller team would be a great way of keeping the Speedster busy. Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, Heat Wave and Mirror Master have all proved their worth over the years. Since they’d all challenge Barry in a number of ways, it would make sense that he seeks out help from other heroes. And since we know Ben Affleck’s Batman
will be a mentor to The Flash, perhaps he’d offer help in taking down the Rogues. The Reverse-Flash could still play a small role in becoming an overarching villain, but the Rogues would be Barry’s main threat.
Future Flash
Andy Muschietti has already revealed that the film will have a deeply emotional core, but what’s more emotional than discovering your future self has become warped and bitter? That’s exactly what happened in the
New 52 comics when the Future Flash was introduced. After Wally West died, the Future Flash travelled back in time to kill all his former enemies. This would apparently give him the excess speed he needs to save Wally. We’ve already seen a future version of Barry visit the past in
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and time travel will always be popular among general audiences. Perhaps the Future Flash comes back to kill his past self after witnessing the full devastation of
Flashpoint and what happens to the world. So not only would Barry be faced with a villainous version of himself, he’d also have to grapple with the idea that he might not be doing the right thing by saving his Mother. Did we mention the Future Flash has a stunning blue and white costume? That’s a perfect opportunity for some incredible statues or Funko Pops…
Godspeed
Two evil speedsters are better than one, right? If you’ve read The Flash’s
DC Rebirth run or seen the
TV series, you might be familiar with Godspeed. Good detective turned bad, August Heart becomes a villain after being hit by a speed-force storm engineered by a terrorist group. He works at the Central City Police Department, and Barry helps him solve murders with his CSI skills. His identity as Godspeed remains hidden for a while, even briefly pretending to be a hero alongside The Flash. When we last saw Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen at the end of
Justice League, he’d got a job with the CCPD. What’s a better way of giving the hero an obstacle in his new profession? Making his colleague a villain. Obviously we’ve seen a
version of Godspeed in the TV series, but we think he hasn’t been done justice yet.
The Anti-Monitor
Call us crazy, but is it really that impossible that Ezra Miller’s appearance in
Crisis On Infinite Earths could tie into his solo movie? Thanks to
Jim Lee, we already know that meeting Grant Gustin’s scarlet speedster is what gives the DCEU Flash his name. And since Crisis incorporated most of the universes we’ve seen throughout DC films and TV, perhaps this version of
The Flash is trying to save his universe from being wiped out. The event could easily cause him to meet Michael Keaton’s Batman. It would be quite easy to pit him against the Anti-Monitor from the CW, although it would be great to see LaMonica Garrett get a better cinematic costume. It might be hard to weave in the TV
Crisis elements for casual moviegoers, but we’ve got faith in Andy Muschietti and Christina Hodson. We’ve got only one requirement, give Grant Gustin a cinematic cameo or a full scene. It would only be fair since the two speedsters have already crossed paths.
The Black Racer
If Andy Muschietti and Ezra Miller really want to dive deep into the Speed Force and the cosmic nature of The Flash, a truly great villain to use would be The Black Racer. Yes, we could also use the Black Flash like the TV series did, but honestly, the Black Racer is a lot cooler. A zombie version of The Flash would feel cheap for the big-screen. But a cosmic knight who uses skis to propel himself through the Speed-Force? That’s badass. Especially since he hunts Speedsters for their souls. If Barry’s meddling with the timeline catches the Racer’s attention, the film could easily turn into a multiverse-hopping adventure as The Flash tries to escape. Let’s hope Michael Keaton’s Batman has something in his utility belt to help with that one.
Darkseid
This one all hinges on what Warner Brothers decide to do with Zack Snyder’s
Justice League cut. If they decide to use it as canon, or at least want to acknowledge it, there’s definitely a world in which Darkseid becomes the main villain of
The Flash. We already know that in the director’s cut
Darkseid saw the Justice League through a Boom Tube after they defeated Steppenwolf. If the lord of Apokolips chooses to continue his war against Earth and spreading the Anti-Life Equation, Barry could easily try to assemble more heroes with the help of Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne. Perhaps in an attempt to travel through time to recruit someone, he accidentally crosses into another universe and meets Michael Keaton’s Batman. Since Ava DuVernay is working on a
New Gods movie for the future, it would be a smart move for the studio to really lay more groundwork for these characters. Seeding Darkseid more heavily as a puppet master in
The Flash would be a great way of teasing audiences with what’s to come.
Captain Boomerang
After fans finally got a glimpse of Captain Boomerang’s
return in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, it would be pretty easy to bring Jai Courtney into
The Flash. Let’s not forget that they already crossed paths in the first
Suicide Squad, which could give Digger Harkness the perfect motivation to put a stop to The Flash. He could easily want revenge for being pulled into Task Force X and doing Amanda Waller’s bidding. We’re not sure he’s a perfect replacement as a main villain like the Reverse-Flash, but it would be great to see Jai Courtney and Ezra Miller on-screen together again.
Penguin
We know what you’re thinking, ‘Penguin going up against The Flash?!’ but hear us out. Now that the door to the multiverse has been well and truly opened with Michael Keaton’s Batman, anything is possible. Keaton returning to the screen could allow the film to use villains from other eras of DC movies, like Tim Burton’s Batman Returns.
An ageing Batman trying to recruit The Flash into stopping the Penguin’s crimewave in return for helping him reset a messed up timeline? Perfect. Of course, in an ideal world we’d bring Danny DeVito back for the role and resurrect his version of Oswald Cobblepot. Just take a leaf out of the Star Wars playbook. “Somehow, Penguin has returned…” And why not have a cameo from Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, it’d be rude not to.
Deathstroke
Is our top pick just an excuse to bring
Joe Manganiello back as Slade Wilson for a full Deathstroke appearance? Absolutely. We all know the theatrical cut of
Justice League is divisive, but we can all agree that the Deathstroke costume was stunning. And although it’s not yet clear where
The Flash stands in the continuity, or if it’ll reshape the DC multiverse, it wouldn’t be too difficult to bring Deathstroke back to the big screen. But how would the villain tie into Barry Allen’s story? Well there’s a perfect tale from
DC Rebirth which mirrors Barry’s own tragic attempts to save his mother in
Flashpoint. After Deathstroke’s son, Grant Wilson, dies at the hands of the Teen Titans, Slade captures two versions of Wally West to take their speed so he can travel back in time to save Grant. He actually pulls this off, turning over a new leaf and trying to use his abilities for good… Well, at least for a while anyway. Sure, this might need a little reshaping to fit into the narrative of the DCEU, but Deathstroke going after Barry to steal his powers to save his son? What a way to bring emotional resonance to a character we’ve only briefly glimpsed on-screen. And obviously, we’d need to see a fight between Batfleck and Deathstroke – that’s a dealbreaker.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, Ezra Miller’s The Flash will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.
