With Supergirl ending after season 6, many are now wondering if The Flash might be ready to end its run as well. With Arrow having ended after eight seasons earlier this year, The Flash is now the longest-running series in the Arrowverse and there have been signs that some of the cast may be ready to cross the proverbial finish line.
The recent announcement that Supergirl season 6 would be its last sent shockwaves throughout the Arrowverse fandom. While no specific reason was given for the decision, it was presumed that lead actress Melissa Benoist was ready to step out of the role of Kara Zor-El to focus on raising her newborn child, not to mention the series had seen its ratings consistently drop over the past few years. Arrow came to a close for similar reasons, though, with actor Stephen Amell wishing to spend more time with his wife and young daughter. This leaves only The Flash among the "big three" superhero shows that came together to form the Arrowverse, raising the question of just how much longer The Flash might continue to run, as it begins production on season 7.
Grant Gustin, who plays the lead role of Barry Allen, is reportedly only under contract through the end of The Flash season 7. However, Gustin was in negotiations to sign-on for another two seasons before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down production and ended the contract negotiation process. Despite this, Gustin has shown no signs of being ready to leave The Flash just yet. The same cannot be said of Carlos Valdes, who plays the role of STAR Labs' engineer Cisco Ramon, who has been rumored as wanting to leave The Flash since season 5 and took a reduced role in season 6. Danielle Panabaker, who plays both Dr. Caitlin Snow and Frost, also had a reduced role in season 6, but that was due to her pregnancy while filming. It's possible she might also want to leave the show rather than try to balance raising an infant and starring in a TV series, but there has been nothing to indicate Panabaker intends to leave the show after The Flash season 7.
Ironically, The Flash is probably the only show in the Arrowverse that had a built in contingency for continuing if its lead actor ever decided to leave the show. In the original comics, Wally West, the first Kid Flash, stepped in to replace Barry Allen after his death during Crisis On Infinite Earths in 1985. An entire generation of superhero fans grew up with Wally West as their Flash, before Barry Allen was resurrected in 2009. This could theoretically happen in The Flash, if Keiynan Lonsdale (who plays Wally West in the Arrowverse) could be persuaded to return to the series full time. This seems unlikely, as Lonsadale has already effectively retired from the role, apart from one guest appearance during The Flash Season 6.
It should be noted, however, that The Flash season 7 will be starting production soon and there is no sign that any of the core cast are ready to leave at the end of this year. Moreover, there is also no indication that The CW is in a hurry to bring The Flash, which is its most highly rated series, to an end anytime soon. Barring any sudden changes or announcements to the contrary, it seems likely that while Supergirl may be ending in 2021, The Flash is still moving forward - for now. Something could always change by the end of season 7.
